There is a petition http://www.petitiononline.com/atipet/petition.html
concerning the stability and availability of binary ATI drivers for 32/64bit.
A must-sign for every linux user who bought an ATI card.
Although the matter is already discussed in the AMD64 forum (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=206193), this affects the 32bit users as well.

regards

Good idea! I'm signing. BTW, I'll add the link to my signature.

IMHO it's for all linux users, because even users of cards of different manufactureres benefit from good ATI drivers.

First, it's always good to have a choice and second, it's good for everybody if ATI users can use linux more easily and effectively.

We have more than 63500 forum users registered at this moment. It would be sad if we can't get more than 6350 subscribers of that petition!

Regards,

Joe

It would be good if mods moved this topic to "Kernel & Hardware" and made it sticky. There are many ATI users who will benefit from the better drivers.
I suppose that if those who want better drivers added the link to their signature, even more people would sign the petition. What do you think?

Why does it only demand drivers up to 9800 series cards? What about the latest series?

I'll sign because for the last two ATI cards I've had, the drivers didn't work at all.

Its odd, but I haven't had ANY trouble with ATI drivers whatsoever since I did my Stage One. All I had to do was disable XFree DRM and thats really it. Works great, no problems on ANY kernels. But I will say that, prior to this, I had tons of trouble with their drivers. I hope they listen to the users, and make better products for all it's users, and not just the majority.

it's not the trouble people complain about, it's the poor performance on linux. On windows XP, radeon 9800 is probably the best card you can have. but, on linux it's as bad as geforce 4.

It's unfortunate when people don't read then ask questions. Let me try to make this clear for you.

The products we include in this are as follows:
1. All desktop Raedon chips up through 9800
2. All mobile Raedon chips up through 9800
3. ALL X-SERIES CHIPS
4. All TV and Remote Wonders
5. All FireGL chips

Hope that helps.

Yea, you are right about that... I only get like 15k GLXGears, whereas some nV cards get ~30,000... Doesn't bother me as much as it did before, though, since I play most games on my XBox these days anyways. My 9800 Pro does get used for some UT2k4 [quit playing competitvely though since I moved to Gentoo] and some other games. The performance could indeed be better.

I signed it too. Though I'd appreciate more if they made the drivers more stable and improved TV-out support. 3D graphics can wait.

I get a whooping 1500 fps in glxgears with a 9600XT on SuSE 9.1 with the newest fglrx and X.org...

Damn you, ATi!

Funny... there was another petition in 2003. Guess ATi doesn't care.

And another one here.

They have gotten 241 names in more than half a year...

We've gotten 1500 names in TWO days!
We have to show ATi that we're many nowdays, and that we care!

PS And give us back the AMD64 thread!

Btw, the 2003 petition says this:

Quote:
To: ATi Technologies Inc.

We are a group of Italian Linux User and in our PC we have an Ati Technologies Inc. video card (mainly Radeon). We have to use the TV-Out feature of Your Video Cards but the Utility work only in Windows. We know that our OS doesn't have a big number of users (like Windows (TM)) but we think that one of your primary goal is the compatibility with all the OS, not only Windows. So we ask to Ati Technologies Inc. to produce an official driver for XFree86 4.3.0 and a little and simple grafic utility to configure and activate all feeature like Tv-Out.

With Regards

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Isn't that EXACTLY what ATi has done? I think they do listen to petition, but it might be hard to see that they do...
