Hmm. The two threads I tend to refer people to in this case are Don't update glibc if your running unstable. and Problem with glibc 2.3.1 being autocleaned+a few suggestions. General meta-advice: when upgrading critical packages like glibc, have a binary backup package (made with emerge -b) on hand, assume the worst, upgrade defensively.
