I used to have this problem too, I believe i fixed it by compiling my kernel with the following:
Code:
<M> Sound card support
<M>   Creative SBLive! (EMU10K1)
[*]     Creative SBLive! MIDI

and then emerging emu10k1.

hth,

I recompiled my kernel for sound support as a module. Then i downloaded the emu10k1 tar file. Unpacked it, the usual make, make install stuff. Then ran a modprobe emu10k1. Made sure all the modules were loaded correctly. Then since i have digital speakers, ran a quick emu-config -d. and bam, sound!
