ok..... lets just say the 'smart remark' -thing was ment in a ironic way!!!

i am using dsl over a router to connect to the internet. and eth0 is my realtek chip net card.

what could be the problem?

yeah i have the exact same problem, except i'm running gentoo inside vmware. when i do
Code:
shutdown now
it hangs after eth0

but if i just do
Code:
reboot
then it sails past shutting down eth0 and reboots fine.

so thats how i'm shutting down at the moment... not ideal as you can imagine...

anyone got any ideas?

Code:

reboot

Should be, as far as I know, essentially an alias for
Code:

shutdown -r now

Therefore, to halt (shutdown) your system, try
Code:

shutdown -h now

That command is useable in every *ix that I've come across (HP-UX, AIX, NCR, Linux)

Or, you can use the command:
Code:

halt
