I don't know where to post this... I'm running Lycrorus Desktop/LX . He, I can't even spell it. This is the first distro I've ever used that doesn't have a compiler. How the heck am I supposed to get rid of slow KDE and install Rox? It's nice and pretty... Anyway, I know that Gentoo is for power users but I think it's the potential to become an excellent desktop OS. I think most desktop environment hide the power of Linux instead of putting it to use. For example, for the power user creating a boot floppy form an image should be as easy as dragging the image unto /dev/fd0. By the way, is there current;y some kind of desktop standard that works across desktop environments to handle things like mime-types, AutoStart of applications, application menus. It seems all desktops do their own thing. It would by nice to install xine and have a menu entry show under kde, gnome, rox, sawfish, windowmaker... you get the point. Mandrake tried this but it only works with their packages. It would be nice if it was supported by developers. Anyway, GO Gentoo!!! 8O

http://www.freedesktop.org/

There you can find info on interoperatibilty between different desktop wm/de's

I know that kde 3.1 (3.0?) and gnome 2.0 support things like docklets (which just use you systray regardless if you are running kde or gnome), but still: most depends on the developers of the software you use, if they won't let their software-product make menu entries than even standardisation is useless
