|

Hi all,
Got a memory question about my laptop. First off, here are the specs corresponding to my current problem:
*********************************
m6805 : amd64
kernel 2.6.3-r2
enlightenment 0.16.6
grellm2 2.1.28
*********************************
Problem is this:
After the laptop has been running for awhile, usually around 10 -> 13 hours, my gkrellm2 monitor shows that I've only got 110 -> 170MB of free mem left, where as for the first 10 hours, it had 440+/- a few MB.
So, I checked the system monitor, and running processes to see what is what.
The following is a list of the process run by the user. (Bare in mind, the system is sitting in enlightenment, with NO screensaver, and the only app running is gkrellm2. It does go into screen blanking, but I don't think that is the problem)
********************************
Processes Shown In System Monitor
bonobo-activation-server -----------user----------25.3MB of mem
gconfd-2-------------------------------user----------23.1MB of mem
gnome-pty-helper--------------------user----------9.2MB of mem
esd-------------------------------------user----------7.8MB of mem
It obviously shows the gkrellm2, and enlightenment as well, but the ones listed above are a mystery as I didn't start them.
So, I killed all of the above except the esd because that is my desktop sound system (correct if I'm wrong).
So, after ending the processes, they stay gone, except for the bonobo and the gconfd-2 which come back after a time.
I'm not sure what starts them, but that really is only a side note of this problem.
My main question is, gkrellm is showing that I now only have 110MB of free memory available. Where has all of my free mem gone?
If I restart enlightenment, it still says the same.
The only way to get the mem back is a full blown reboot.
It happens in all the different desktops that I've tried. (gnome, kde, enlightenment)
Please advise.

Is the system actually running slower? It is my understanding that Linux handles memory considerably different that Windows does, especially considering memory allocated. For instance, my system now is using nearly all of my memory, or so karamba says, but system performance is not affected and swap space is not being used. The way I understood it when I first noticed this(and became suspicious as you have) Linux allocated lots of memory around, but dynamically allocated to programs that need it on the fly, so that the system is nearly always using most of its memory, and that I shouldnt be alarmed by it. If anyone wants to contribute their thoughts and the output of "free" to confirm this would be appreciated.
Here's mine:
free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 511296 504932 6364 0 35752 282420
-/+ buffers/cache: 186760 324536
Swap: 498004 0 498004
btw-my performance is great even though this says im almost out |

Is that sarcasm?
Tnx for the replies. I'll actually be back on land in about a week, so I'll have better access to the internet rather than this slower than 2kb/s satellite connection. _________________ --== Linux: More configurable than a Mr. Potato Head ==--
