HI,
I am trying to install Gentoo on to an AS1000A and am unable to access the Mylex DAC960 raid card. I tried
#modprobe dac960
modprobe said the module did not exist.
Can any one suggest how to cross compile the kernel on an
x86 that is running gentoo.
I am using the following liveCD gentoo-alpha-2004.0-20040313.iso

Many thanks in advance

Hi crimpyau,

I have the same problem with an AS1200, I have submitted a bug request to have the dac960 module added to the next LiveCD.

The workaround at this stage is to build a minimal system on a standalone disk (with DAC960 support), once booted into this system use it like a LiveCD to build a new system on the array.

It's a long process and I'm yet to get it working, but I'm still making progress.

Cheers,
Carbs

I have run into another problem with my Mylex Controller, when I try and modprobe DAC960 it segment faults. I thought maybe it was a possible firmware issue, so I updated the firmware to the latest version (2.70, from HP's website).

The reason I updated the firmware as due to this line

Code:
DAC960#0: FIRMWARE VERSION VERIFICATION FAILED

But even after the update I still get the same problem.

I will keep looking around for a solution to this issue, i'll let you know if I find anything, but hopefully you won't run into this problem.

I tried building this module as part of the kernel but it caused the kernel to stop with an "tried to kill init" error, so I just created a module so i can atleast try & troubleshoot the problem.

Here is what i get in dmesg...

Code:

Well it turns out that the DAC960 driver for Linux requires firmware version 2.73 or higher to work, hence the error. DEC/Compaq/HP only have v2.70, so I guess I'll keep sniffing around until I find a newer firmware version, although I'm not sure how well it will work as its an OEM board (Digital KZPAC).

I managed to find a firmware update for this card, its not the official DEC version but it worked. My controller is now running v2.73 of the firmware and it works like a charm.

I got the flash utility from DEC and just googled for the firmware, I was a bit worried not using the correct firmware but I figured it was worth the risk. I was lucky and it all works well and I can now access my Mylex array.

Time to get my root partition onto the array :D
