I totally concur. I saw it when it came out in theatres. What was the deal with the cowboy? Lynch always has some of these totally chaotic characters. I was very impressed with Naomi Watts' acting ability, having never heard of her before. However, Lynch can sometimes elicit great performances from bad actresses (paging Sherilyn Fenn...).

The cowboy is one of the more frightening characters of the Lynch filmography, I guess.
It may be, indeed, the best film Lynch made ever. Naomi Watts is superb. And the work with sound and music, as usual with Lynch, is a master piece, not only for the Badalamenti score, but for the entire sound design.

In a way I agree, but not the same way you do.

If this movie had been made by anyone else, it would have been called a piece of shit!

That's right, it's probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen, but since it was The Greate D. Lynch who made it, everyone is oohhing and aaahing over it. Garbage!

I didn't like it that much until I actually figured out what the hell was going on (took 3 or so watchings). Now that I understand the correct sequence of events, what's a dream, etc. it's awesome. But even if you don't figure out the plot, it's worth watching just for the emotional charge built into the movie.

However, if you don't like Lynch's stuff, it's hard to enjoy. I can understand the position of not liking Lynch - it's not for everyone.

It's a beautiful movie! You watch the entire movie pretty much clueless and in the end it all comes down on you... shocking!
Yeah, great movie!

Yeah, great movie!

I got a copy of it and I watched a few times since everyone was raving about it.

Didn't change my mind at all, crap!

Hey, Erik! I didn't say you should like it. I just said *I* liked it. A film or any other artwork is not that objective... Some people like it, some not.
Back to work ppl...

I don't think so... You can like it or not, but it's a good movie anyway, may be not for all tastes. If you think that I like it because of Lynch, I must say that I like only a portion of L. films, and I can say that I'm not a newby at film watching/criticizing even making.
I hate the fanaticisms and cultisms of any kind, and if I like this particular movie is for the film as an object by itself, beyond any childish absoluteness than someone can have.

Personally, I love this movie. It is visually stunning with a very powerful soundscore. Watching it at home in the dark, with the full surround experience, you can feel the emotional charge building. Plus, when you finally get the movie....smack! I wouldn't recommend it to everyone...different strokes for different folks...but I liked it.

cheers,
kipper

I found it to be one of the better movies, whatever that means, well I wil even go so far as to say I liked it, well to be honest, I loved it. nice to see all the pieces fall together.
I have to re-watch it to find some more details (seen it some months ago), still I have to watch a few other movies first. But if you want a mind numbing action movie, which doesn't require any brain activity what so ever, don't pick this one, ;-)

The movie was okay, my wife just adores it. Personally, I watched it with her three times (with hours of explanation for what was what). I read reviews. I asked other friends about it. I just don't get it. What was it all about? Whatever...if I have to think that hard it just isn't worth it.

If I have to think that hard it just IS worth it.

Michel Chion says that the movie is a do-it-yourself kit, I agree.
