make emerge not delete build?

is it possible to make emerge simply build a package (in my case X), and not install it just build it so i can point the cvs ati.2 gatos driver to it.

the only way i would think it could work is by commenting out the src_install() and possibly pkg_preinst(),pkt_postinst() in the ebuild.

there has to be a better way to do it.

You can do that manual with "ebuild"... unpack the source, cd to the source directory, patch it and then compile and merge it. "man ebuild" or "ebuild --help" should help.
