|
|
hey all,
I am going to purchase the latest apple powerbook (with built in slot loading dvd writer!!! )
anyway, seeing as I am a network administrator, there are a number of things I'd like to be able to run on my fresh gentoo ppc system.
does anyone know which apps will NOT compile under ppc architecture ?
the programs I want to use are:
vmware (so I can run windows on my mac - will this work !?? - NB only to test client's networks!!!)
openoffice
kde
evolution
fluxbox
xmms
gimp
samba
cups
mozilla
wine
winex
crossover office
crossover plugin
and ofcourse, X and gcc and the rest of the base system
also - what kernel should Ibe using ? do the new 2.5. support ppc ? will the 2.6 ?
I've always been a PC person... so sorry for my ignorance and thanks! _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Hi taskara,
I have a IBook2. There shouldn't be that much differences

vmware (so I can run windows on my mac - will this work !?? - NB only to test client's networks!!!) --> don't know exactly. But I don't think so, it's only Binary Code for i386 available and/or it needs the i386 processor-arch.
openoffice--> works fine
kde--> works fine (KDE 3.0.x)
...
xmms--> works fine (with the oss-driver)
gimp--> works fine
samba--> works fine
cups--> works fine
mozilla--> works fine with me (1.0-r3)
...
...
I don't know if the other programms are running, especially wine, winex, crossoveroffice, crossoverplugin.
Currently I'm using XFree 4.2.1 and gcc3.2-r2 without any problems
Kernel: ppc-sources from the portage tree (2.4.19-r6)

VMware is a contained environment, not a complete simulated environment. You must have an x86 processor. Apple's computers are all PowerPC based. Use bochs. Or Virtual PC+Mac OSX. Or Virtual PC+Mac OS X+Mac-on-Linux.
Remember, PPC is to x86 as Apples are to Oranges. |

You wont be able to run:
vmware
wine
winex
crossover office
crossover plugin
These are all x86 only applications which require x86 processors, everything else you listed should be fine |

thanks heaps guys!
pity about winex I have a subscription to it, and vmware, for which I own a license crossover office AND plugin, which I also have a purchased copy
must think carefully about this one!
what about games, like ut2003 which installs natively ? put only says x86 on the box ?
to mac or not ro mac.. that is the question... _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

again, UT2003 (and almost any games since the demise of Loki) are very x86 centric.
If you want microsoft office, vmware, and 3d games, then sadly, I dont think ppc is what you will be happy with |

You could also use mol to run MacOSX and then VirtualPC to run windows... that way you don't have to run that crappy OS until you absolutely need it. Everything would then run on x86... if this doesn't work, I'd suggest the PorscheBooks at BestBuy if they are shipping... it won't have a DVD writer, but it's basically an x86 in a tibook body... the VirtualPC route isn't very fast, but as long as you don't need to do it a lot, it'll work.. as far as linux commercial apps.. I think someone needs to start kicking some venders to support us!!! heh, good luck in your quest... and those new powerbooks look sweet.. I might have to pick one up in a year (my current book is a 667mhz with a gig of ram, so it'll be fine for awhile...)

edit:// openoffice does just about anything I ever need to do with microsoft office... and ximian evolution is a pretty good outlook replacement... which reminds me... I have to send some updated ebuilds to someone.. heh |

In my case cups compiles but exits with "Segmentation Fault". However, I am not sure it's common for all PPC users - propbably some of tilda-ppc-keyworded ebuilds screwed my system up somehow. Postgresql ebuild compilation error is another reason forcing me to blame tilda-ppc.
If you'll get same problem with cups - you may try pdq or lprng.
But anyway , if you need a stable system - stay away from tilda-ppc, it may give you more headache comparing to tilda-x86. |

hmm what a shame
the titanium was everything I wanted in a pc.
I wrote down what I wanted:
laptop
2.5 kgs or less
15" screen
lots of ram
40gig hard drive or more
firewire
good graphics card
powerful processor
2-3 hours battery life
dvd and cdrw
and not a single x86 laptop I could find matched what I wanted, but the titanium powerbook fit the bill perfectly... but if I can't run all my software on it, sadly I don't think I should spend the money...
pity because I also do digital film work, for which macos X would have been nice..
thanks for your responses guys, and if anyone thinks of a solution, let me know!! _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Mac OS X will run most of what works on wine/linux/x86 because chances are that it has been ported to the Mac.
vmware (so I can run windows on my mac - will this work !?? - NB only to test client's networks!!!) - Use Virtual PC/Mac OS X[/Mac-on-Linux/Linux]/PPC
openoffice - Could use Microsoft Office v.X/Mac OS X/[Mac-on-Linux/Linux]/PPC, or openoffice/Linux/PPC, or [worst] openoffice/XDarwin/Mac OS X/PPC
kde - KDE/Linux/PPC, KDE/XDarwin/fink/Mac OS X/PPC is possible under fink.
evolution - Evolution/Linux/PPC, Evolution/fink/Mac OS X/PPC under fink.
fluxbox - fluxbox/X/Linux/PPC, fluxbox/fink/Mac OS X/PPC under fink.
xmms - xmms/Linux/PPC, xmms/fink/Mac OS X/PPC
gimp - gimp/Linux/PPC, gimp/fink/Mac OS X/PPC
samba - samba/Linux/PPC, samba/fink/Mac OS X/PPC or samba/Mac OS X/PPC (built-in)
cups - cups/Linux/PPC, cups/Mac OS X/PPC (built-in)
mozilla - mozilla/Linux/PPC, mozilla/fink/Mac OS X/PPC or mozilla/Mac OS X/PPC (do you want command line options? If so, use fink)
wine - Windows/Virtual PC/Mac OS 9/X
winex - Windows/Virtual PC/Mac OS 9/X [Slow!]
crossover office - Microsoft Office v.X/Mac OS X, Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac/Mac OS 9
crossover plugin - Why bother when there is a native PPC version for Mac OS X?
That covers just about everything. For a complete list of what runs under PPC in portage, do:
| Code: |
cd /usr/portage
find * -name '*.ebuild' -exec grep -H ppc {} \; | less

cool, what does it do!? - my guess something to do with portage ?
ahh.. portage navigator.. cool
I think I will get the powerbook - but it's not here until mid december
I'll try it out when I get gentoo up and running on it.
only thing that's detering my atm, is not being able to play games under linux on it (not that I play a lot, but I'd like to be able to) but I guess I can buy the mac versions and play them under macosX - but that's going to be limited _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |
