Okay, I'm having the same problem listed at the top of this thread...it tells me that it can't find either of those devices just like the original post. My speakers seem to be making occasional popping sounds, though.

I'd LIKE to get sound working, so what do I need to emerge to get that going? I made sure I enabled sound in my kernel when I was compiling it.

Thanks!

Some details on what hardware you are using would be helpful. Also did you compile soundcard specific support into your kernel or just sound support (soundcore) and you intend to use ALSA?

Oh yeah, I guess details would be helpful! Sorry!

When I run cat /proc/pci | grep audio, I get the following output...

Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 2).

I did compile soundcard-specific support (well, I chose a few modules to install, anyway, not knowing for sure which module I'd need). I nstalled:

Crystal SoundFusion (CS4280/461x)
Crystal Sound CS4281
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI 97 (ES1371)
Intel ICH (i8xx), SiS 7012, NVidia nForce Audio or AMD 768 (I don't know why I did this one)

I don't know really all that much about ALSA or OSS....I guess I need to read up on those!

Is that enuff info to be able to help me?

I also have an AC97 built-in. If I remember correctly, that is one of the choices if you look hard in the sound section. I had to look twice before I found it.

You are going to have to recompile your kernel no matter what sound you want to use - Kernel or ALSA.

Read up on ALSA as I have heard it makes better sound.

If you use ALSA, you have to pull out all choices but <M> for soundcard support when you reconfigure the kernel.

If you want kernel, deselect everything but the AC97 entry.

I'm looking right now for the AC '97 entry, but I can't find it...it's under the sound menu in the kernel config, right? These are the cards I've got listed there to choose from...

BT878 audio dma
C-Media PCI (CMI8338/8738)
Creative SBLive! (EMU10K1)
Crystal SoundFusion (CS4280/461x) (loaded as module)
Crystal Sound CS4281 (loaded as module)
Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1370)
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI 97 (ES1371) (loaded as module, the closest thing I can find to the AC '97)
ESS Technology Solo1
ESS Maestro, Maestro2, Masetro2E driver
ESS Maestro3/Allegro driver (EXPERIMENTAL)
Intel ICH (i8xx), SiS 7012, NVidia nForce Audio or AMD 768 (module)
RME Hammerfall (RME96xx) support
S3 SonicVibes
Trident 4DWave DX/NX, SiS 7018 or ALi 5451 PCI Audio Core
Support for Turtle Beach MultiSound Classic, Tahiti, Monterey
Support for Turtle Beach MultiSound Pinnacle, Fiji
Via 82C686 Audio Codec
OSS sound modules

If I go with kernel sound, I guess I need to add OSS sound modules as a module, huh?

My apologies, for some reason I thought it said AC97 -- Mine is VIA82C686. * I enabled both audio and midi... I can't remember where I made the association.. Maybe I noticed that in BIOS setup or in the boot messages... Don't know and am compiling right now, so I can't check right now... Somewhere I saw this line --

VIA 82C686 AC97 Audio

If you go with ALSA, heres a tip I found while searching the web...
