Just saw it on slashdot. It's kinda like Sun's Looking Glass project. Take a look at these screenies.
Ok, I want it |

If anyone gets this running, I'd love a little howto..
Compile was painless, then I made a metisse script in my /etc/X11/Sessions with
#!/bin/sh
Xwnc -geometry 1024x768 :1
metisse-start-fvwm
in it and changed my rc.conf, but when I tried startx, I just got a black screen. ctrl-alt-backspace showed me this :
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
(II) Initializing extension GLX
in my logs. Is my problem just a faulty GLX, or am I doing something else wrong in the install? I'd really like to mess around with this. |

well I noticed that meltisse-start-fvwm was trying to connect to :1 instead of :0 so that might be why it isn't working for you. When I changed the script to connect to :0 it just crashed on me. |

Ok, my brain seems to have collapsed unded its own weight as i am unable to find this "Xwnc" command anywhere. I think i must have somehow messed a step in the installation. All i have done is the following, all as root and all in the directory in which i unpacked the metisse and nucleo tarballs...
Code: |
./configure
make
make install
|
But then i am unable to find the Xwnc command to run it!? Some stuff has been installed into the /usr/local but can someone please help me out a little, i'm stumped.
Thanx. _________________ If your life was a book, would anyone want to read it? |

It's pretty awesome, luckily I know fvwm well so I'm porting my theme over
Current progress: http://dev.gentoo.org/~taviso/metisse.png
Still working on it, but it's coming on nicely, the scale window feature rocks _________________ --------------------------------------

Hi
EDIT2 - WOW!!!!
That has to be the easiest program to install and run, for its relative complexity - copy/pasted both commands and it just popped up almost instantly.
I am a complete newbie on these minamalist WMs - Not been weened from KDE yet - So could someone post a config/link for tutorial etc? I can pic kup the Metisse bit, just not the FVWM bit....
EDIT3 - WOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just playing - This is fkin amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
So smooth - total moving transparency and user settable transparency at any time - you can rotate, scale, and mirror/flip windows in _realtime_ and use them with the mouse and everything, at anytime!!!!!!
Windows - eat your heart out............

As nice as it looks, I also miss the practical use for it. It may be a nice thing to play with, but as a working environment? _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |

Does it support anything other than fvwm?
I like the idea. _________________ #359074 |

That's right - piss all over my bonfire
It may not be exceedingly useful, but it's cool and there are some uses - Transparently playing a movie over the top of surfing the internet or writing a document. You can also just angle the movie and angle the other app opposite.
Sounds reasonable to me....
Just a note - I can't get KMail to run - it just segfaults

This thing is very much droolable and a cool show-off for all your Windows-friends. Ok, at least for me Metisse seems to be a bit sluggish here and there, but yes, I do realize it still very experimental. But a very promising project! Way to go! Am gonna play with this eye-candy. _________________ Yes, I'm the man. Now it's your turn to decide if I meant "Yes, I'm the male." or "Yes, I am the Unix Manual Page.". |

I only get a blank whitish screen. Xwnc logs:
Code: | _XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for inet
Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets

Any ideas?

Could somebody who's gotten it working give a brief howto? I'm not sure where to put the commands - in .xinitrc? In an xterm? On the console? Right now I've gotten Xwnc to start without errors and metisse to connect, but then it fails with the following:
Code: | glWindow_GLX : No suitable visual |
Actually, it doesn't fail persay, in fact fvwmi is running but I've got nothing on my screen but borderless xterms... any pointers? |

AUDIT: Wed Jun 30 22:04:37 2004: 23578 Xwnc: client 1 rejected from IP 127.0.0.1 port 3279
I don't want rejection! Accept! Accept! |

try the tips about xauth or just run Xwnc with "-ac" - at least, that made metisse not crash, even if it's still doing nothing, |

Can someone who has gotten this to run please post a quick set of instructions on exactly what they did as my stupididty is still preventing me from finding any "Xwnc" program after an apparently problem free compile.

My Xwnc is at /usr/local/bin/Xwnc . Perhaps /usr/local/bin is not on your path?
Alternatively try this as root to search for the file -
Code: | find /usr/ -name Xwnc -print |
|

thanx for the reply, i've searched my entire machine but its just not there...
Code: |
plasma4 root # find /usr/ -name Xwnc -print
plasma4 root #
|
I must have done something wrong during the install but there is only a few steps, and i can't figure how i've stuffed them up, it would be great if someone could post exactly what they did to get it going, even if its just for my sanity.

Here's what I've done so far:
Code: | tar xvjf nucleo-0.1.tar.bz2
cd nucleo-0.1
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
su
make install |
Then for metisse:
Code: | tar xvjf metisse-0.3.0.tar.bz2
cd metisse-0.3.0
./configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-fontpath=/usr/share/fonts/misc,/usr/share/fonts/75dpi,/usr/share/fonts/100dpi
make
su
make install
|
then i tried various combinations of commands that have not yet worked, but at least Xwnc existed... please, someone who's gotten this working help us out! |

Go ahead and compile and install things as per the instructions provided on the website (http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/download_install.html).
Close out your X session, and at a console, run:
Code: | Xwnc -geometry 1280x1024 & |
Obviously you'll have to adjust the geometry setting according to what your specific resolution is. Now, what I did was just edit up a new .xinitrc so I could run the metisse-start-fvwm script...
~/.xinitrc
Code: | metisse-start-fvwm -wd :0 |
Then you can just startx and you should be in. I'm about to give this a second test to make sure it still works as I've written it up.
Edit: Yes, that works for me. I'm posting from inside the modified fvwm. |
