I seem to be having problems changing my sound with amixer and any of the guis for it. It appears to change fine and changes my asound.state and such but it doesnt' have any effect on the volume level of my sound card. muting, unmuting, changing volume levels..nothing effects it.

I have a Soundblaster Live Gamer! (believe the same as a Live value)

Code:
/etc/modules.d/alsa

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
# OSS/Free portion
# alias char-major-14 soundcore

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
##  ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
## alias snd-card-0 snd-interwave
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
##  OSS/Free portion
# alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
#alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
#alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
#alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
#alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss

I have soundcore built in to the kernel right now, but have also tried it as a module. I have the correct permissions for the /dev/snd/* and /dev/sound/* devices.

When I first installed alsa it worked fine, but then it stopped working (I might have been messing with an asound.conf file, but it is no longer on my system) so I switched to OSS, but now I'm switching back.

/etc/init.d/alsasound does not give me any errors and is loaded up at boot

Thanks in advance for any help

- Kevin

try installing the alsa-oss compatability layer, then use an OSS mixer (like kmix or the like) to change the volumes.
