|
|
Well, this post could belong either here in the sparc forum or in the games forum, but I figured all the sparc guys would be around here in the sparc forum... So this is where I'm posting my question.
Are there any good games for Gentoo, or more broadly Linux, that will run on a sparc? Strategy games are OK (freeciv-like), real time strategy games are better (Command & Conquer like), and something like quake would be ideal. Not too heavy on the system requirements, but decent graphics.
The catch: it must either come with full datafiles, or the datafiles must be legally downloadable for free. I'd be satisfied with quake2 if I wasn't stuck with just the shareware datafiles. Obviously I can't run wine, which strikes out a lot of possibilities. Tribes/Tribes2 or a compatible clone would be really nice if it ran on a sparc since the full game has been released for free download.
Anything out there that fits? Or is this all wishful thinking? |

A while back I made a serious go at making games work on sparc.
My results were mostly dissapointing, however;
freeciv,
lsdldoom,
frozen-bubble,
and pingus
all worked at the time .. this was about 8 months ago. I can only assume they still work for sparc, however I dont have a system in front of me at the moment to try.
I almost had Ur Quan Masters (portage:uqm) working, except an apperant problem with the palette or something, as well as cingb (gameboy emulator).
You may want to just try adding the ~sparc keyword to some ebuilds and see what happens when you try and emerge them ... make sure to report results!! _________________ -Tim Smith |

You forgot nethack
It also seems like I've installed some games that didn't have sparc or ~sparc in the keywords...
I'll have to check when I get home to see what games I've installed and maybe install some of the above mentioned games. |

there is Dominions 2 (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/d2/1.htm) - great turn based strategy (havn't tried it on sparc yet - but it says it will do . has some of master of magic / civilisation...
it's not free though (there is a playable demo) - but money spent well if you like strategy. |

nethack
tome, moria, zangband -- all pretty much just variants of nethack (if I've offended anyone with this poor discription then sorry, I haven't played any of them long enough to notice any differences)
noeGNUd-nethack -- which actually runs better if I xhost is back to my intel system
falconseye -- again, same as the noeGNUd variant, it runs better when xhosted back to my intel box
wastesedge (an adonthell game)
senken (a sim city-esque game)
xpenguins -- doesn't really count as a game, but it does get installed to the games folder, so I figured I would list it anyway
And I've tried daimonin but it refuses to connect to any servers :/ I'll probably try again the next time it gets updated in portage. |
