I emerged gltron and decided to do a little gaming, and then this happened on execution:

"
WARNING: can't create init video; it's already running
Couldn't set GL mode: X11 driver not configured with OpenGL
"

I emerged xfree first, then the NVIDIA kernel and GLX afterwards. Any suggestions?

First, make sure that you have the Nvidia kernel module loaded:
Code:
modprobe NVdriver

Next, make X use the Nvidia GL drivers by running:
Code:
opengl-update nvidia

Finally, check that you XF86Config config file uses the "nvidia" driver instead of the "nv" one included with X windows.

Well, I tried what nitro suggested. No change.

I'll try remerging xfree, nvidia-kernel and glx, then.

Thanks :)

Well, just redid xfree and the nvidia-drivers, did opengl-update nvidia, checked that nvdriver was loaded, but still didn't work.

I get the same error, saying OpenGL not setup for X.

i think the author of the link posted already made a mistake
try this link's suggestions http://lists.gentoo.org/pipermail/gentoo-announce/2002-April/000139.html
I will try it out as soon as my machine finishes fscking my 60 gig drive.

well, I tried to do what the link said, but it didn't work
then I tried to compile the nvidia drivers downloaded from nvidia's site and install them, but that didn't work either.
I get the same message as you do when I try to run tux racer, and i unmerged and remerged tuxracer after doing both of these.
maybe need something in the XF86Config file I think, or a USE variable for make.conf?
I am just getting started with the whole "not prepacked" thing, and so far Gentoo has been really cool, and kde 3 is pretty neet too, even if it is bulky.

I would bet it is something in the XF86Config file though....

From what I understand, it is only people with the 1.1a gentoo install that have installed recently...
Maybe the kernel that we are using 2.4.19 with a whole bunch o patches is what is causing the nvdriver to not work with opengl?
Does this sound like a viable idea? Even if it doesn't I know that 2.4.17 with hedrick's patch works for me under redhat with the nvidia stuff, cause i play RTCW with that setup. I am going to try a different kernel tonight, I will let you guys know what happens.

I just saw a possible fix for this problem in the mailing lists...

You might try re-emerging libSDL to the latest version as there was a problem with it and opengl. It didn't matter whether you used the opengl in you make.conf or not.

Once that is reinstalled then try to re-emerge tuxracer and with luck it will start working.

On a side note... anyone using KDE and having a problem with arts and no sound in tuxracer can try the following to run tuxracer:
Code:
artsdsp tuxracer

This will allow the sound to be played directly from arts and not require any outside sound daemons.

That works! I never really got to try a new kernel, but now that I know that this works, I don't think the kernel would have done anything for me.

thanks a bunch!
