|
|
Hi Folks.
i've just downloaded gentoo-i686-1.1a.iso
I've burned it onto CD, disk-at-once.
But when i try to boot it, it fails (ie. cannot find any boot device).
I've set up my bios to boot from CD ROM first. Other CD's boot fine, just not my burn.
Is there some ~special trick~ to burn the ISO onto CD, to make it bootable?
Thank in advance to any help. _________________ -\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\

Is the CD readable at all? There's no special trick to burning the iso, though I'm not sure what software you used to burn it (and what weird features that might have) However, I've always just downloaded the iso and used cdrecord to burn it to CD -- never had a problem.

Yes. the contents of the CD are
<root folder of CD>
3 files and a folder
stage1 stage2 and stage3 and some folder.
the software i used to burn it, was some adaptec software on some windows98 machine here at work.
i just grabbed the ~100MB .iso file and dropped it into the =file list= window, then burnt disk-at-once.

Not that way!
Go to your burn software and look for:
| Code: | | Create CD from CD Image |

i did that.
just to be safe, i'll do that again....
| Code: |
file -> Create CD from ISO image
disk-at-once, 4x burn. -GO-
...
boot up CD ... nothing.
Insert windowsxp cd ..... boot .... Works (boots up into install).

So my bios is setup correctly
The new burnt CD is readable also ...
*cries*

Sounds like the software you're using isn't burning the ISO correctly. (or you may not be selecting the right options in the burning program)
I've never used "disk-at-once" before, so I can't tell you how to burn it correctly. However, I'm 99% sure that's where your problem is.
Also, you can always buy a Gentoo CD for a mere USD$3.

The iso image is 132MB listed on the mirror. What is the exact size of the ISO you have? Also, if you have the ability to check md5sums, what is the md5sum of the ISO image? The mirror should have the correct value with the file.
I'm thinking you may have burned an incomplete ISO image, and you might be missing some of the data. |

I have the same problem. Gateway 935c rackmount p3 1.3Ghz. I have booted Win98 and Mandrake from the box, so the bios is set properly. The gateway sets up the ide cdrom as the master on the secondary ide channel on the first ide controller. Anyhow, when the iso boots, it says operating system not found.
I burned the cd w/ x-cd-roast .98alpha9. That uses cdrecord as it's backend. The options I chose were Track at Once TAO, Disk at Once, DAO, and also chose 1x write speed. I don't think it's that because the 16MB buffer never goes under 99% full even at 12x write. I also verfied the cd can be read on other systems with 3 .tbz files, and a isolinux directory. It won't boot on another machine I have here either. Don't know whether it's the burning software or the .iso image. I think I have 1.1a.iso.
I'm not ready to buy a cd, that would take days to get here. I think I will go to the chinagnu smart boot loader and give that a shot.

I had a similar problem with my Gentoo 1.1a ISO on a Winchip2A-200. The CD wasn't at fault, as I could boot the CD from a different PC, and the PC would boot from other CDs. I fixed it by updating the BIOS. It's a shot in the dark and it's probably totally irrelevant, but if it was that then it wouldn't matter how the BIOS was set up.
Just a thought.

Here is an update on the Gateway 935c. First, the 935c is the machine I am trying to boot. The machine that the cd is written on is a custom abit-kt7-raid based system w/ scsi and a hp 9600 internal cd writer write12x.
Second, I downloaded Smart Boot Manager, and tried to boot from the CD (by the way I have made 4 so far), it said OS not found! I tried to boot a win98 CD in the same session from Smart Boot Manager, and it launched.
Inside of X-CD-Roast98alpha9, I did a verify between the .iso and the cdrom. It says 'failed: short read at 137xxxxxx' something. What that's telling me is something isn't burning right on the cd. I wish I could figure it out.

| I had the same problem, it turned out to be the cdrom player. Gentoo uses a system known as isolinux to create a boot cd. Only newer types of cdrom players support this. I temporarely swapped cdrom player just to install and after that reinstalled the original cdrom player. |
