dev-libs/gmp ebuild doesn't create libgmpxx.* ?

as the topic says, I did an 'emerge gmp' and when I tried to compile a program that used gmpxx I got a linker error about the c++ library of GPM (the GNU Multiple-Precision library). I checked and the ebuild does pass the --enable-cxx to the configure script, so I did a 'find / -name libgmp*.*' and there is no libgmpxx.* anywhere on my system. any thoughts?
