Can anyone tell me if they've succeeded in installing Gentoo Linux on an UltraSPARC-III machine (like SunBlade 1000, not 100 which uses an UltraSPARC-II variant)?

I have such a beast under my desk at work, running Solaris9, but I am itching to get some form of linux onto it, preferably my favorite distribution.

I tried booting from the 1.1a image a while ago, but it simply wouldn't work (locked up at some point during boot).

Hrm, don't know if anyone has gotten it working or not. A lot of us have had success using the debian 3.0 sparc rescue cd to install Gentoo. The 1.1a CD has some flaws and we are in the process of making a new bootable install CD.

One thing to keep in mind though on the Debian CD is that you can't activate the swap parition, so either go for a stage 3 install or make sure you have a good amount of RAM (>128MB IIRC).

What flaws do you mean? There were some glitches, but once you know them, there is no problems all, just boot from it download the latest stage1 and bootstraping

I have succesfully installed gentoo on a SPARC, I think it is the same you mention

uname -a gives :
Code:

Linux aqua 2.4.24-sparc-r1 #2 Fri Jan 30 14:57:58 ART 2004 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc IIi (Sabre) GNU/Linux

Linux terra 2.4.24-sparc-r1 #1 Mon Mar 22 18:50:16 ART 2004 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc IIi (Sabre) GNU/Linux

As I am not using it as a desktop I don't know/want/tried sound or 3d acceleration, but X works nicelly, firebird, apache2, cvs, mysql, postfix, ftp, ssh, the usuals. I tried to get kdevelop to work, but haven't tested it because I am trying to get XDMCP over VNC to work, but it closes the connection, and the computer is located far from my desk so I don't try things at the console...
Also I'm trying to get Mosix on both machines, but the kernel doesn't want to pach
distcc'in on both machines...
trying to get ldap to centralize things

Note : I just noticed... date is screwed in both machines!

Also, I am trying to build gentoo on a SparcStation 10 with 32Mb
cat /proc/cpuinfo

Code:

cpu             : Texas Instruments, Inc. - MicroSparc
fpu             : SuperSparc on-chip FPU
promlib         : Version 3 Revision 2
prom            : 2.9
type            : sun4m
ncpus probed    : 1
ncpus active    : 1
BogoMips        : 35.94
MMU type        : TI Viking
contexts        : 65536
nocache total   : 1048576
nocache used    : 380416

Regards.

it really says UltraSPARC IIi, but during the boot process it says UltraSPACR III... if you know a really really accurate way to know of wich SUN we are talking about, I will gladly try it.
