|
|
Ok I was trying to follow the directions to get alsa working. I was reading in Multimedia "Alsa and recompiling the kernel" about how you need to recompile the kernel. I did make menuconfig, set the options, and typed
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
and copied the resulting bzImage to /boot and rebooted.
When I rebooted I still saw the same message while the computer was booting up --
Starting sound driver: snd-emu10k1 modprobe: can't locate module
Then it continued until it got stuck on Starting Local... for a while, then it spit out this:
INIT Id "C1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT Id "C2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT Id "C3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
.... etc through "C6". then
no more processes left at runlevel.
I booted to the gentoo cd and from there I got rid of bzImage and renamed my old image (bzImage.old) back to bzImage. Rebooted. Same thing happened. Is linux dead? Please help ASAP!! I want to know what I am doing wrong -- I can compile another bzImage while booted up to this cd.

Ok - it may or may not be the kernel, it kinda sounds like you've got som e modules specified (either in /etc/modules.autoload or as a dependency to something in one of the init scripts) which didn't get compiled (possibly you skipped one of the alsa modules or compiled it directly into the kernel).
I recomend booting into single user mode: this will not run any of the init scripts in either "net" or "default" runlevels. if you're still booted from the cd, edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst as follows, or if not, you can temporairly [sic?] from within grub.
what we want is to change the kernel line from something like this:
Code: |
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda2 vga=773
|
to something like this
Code: |
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda2 vga=773 -s
|
in grub, highlight the menu entry you want, and hit 'e'. highlight the kernel line, and add the '-s' to the end of it. hit enter, and then 'b' to boot.
If i'm right, this will boot you into safe mode with no issues. now, run the init scripts one by one till one of them causes the above problem.
(sorry to be so long winded :) |

That didnt work. Still did Starting Local... and the same INIT errors. I tried chroot from the cd to get at my hard drive and typed rc-update del alsasound boot which is the only thing that was different after I switched my original kernel image back --- still didnt work. I'm going to try recompiling my kernel again, and if that doesnt work, go into windowz and wait for you guys to help me out.. |

Ok so you can still log into your box even with error.
When you recompile your module you will loose the alsa driver module so you need to re emerge alsa driver.
One question: do you get any error when you compile your kernel does it finish successfuly ? if so.
1) emerge unmerge alsa-driver.
2) do rm -rf /lib/modules/2.4.19 or gentoo-2.4.19-r* ( the name of folder is different depending which kernel you emerge)
3) In your kernel configuration make sur to compile the sound as module but do not include ANY DRIVER !!!! just the first one as module.
4) save your kernel
5) make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
6) mv /boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.old
7) cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/
8 ) emerge alsa-driver (you may need to re emerge nvidia driver because we deleted the /lib/modules/2.4.19...)
10) Make sure your grub is properly configured ( sorry cant help not a grub user ... )
11) look at the documentation for the alsa driver there is some stuff to configure in /etc/conf.d/alsa.
12) Reboot and see ...
Note : I suggestion you include your old bzImage into grub so if the new kernel doesn't work you can still load into the old one and fix the problem.
Hope this will help.

did you put anything in /etc/init.d/local ???
if you do this : ./etc/init.d/locat stop and ./etc/init.d/locat start
and tell us if you get the same error as when you boot. |

I did that and I got the same error, but when I did stop and start I got a message that said
cat: /mnt/.init.d/softlevel No such file or directory.
But anyway I am thinking that it is not local that is the problem. I am thinking this because it says starting local and an [ok] at the far right side. I dont think it would say ok if it wasnt ok. Does anyone know what happens after starting local? That would be a big help. I have been reading all the files in init.d and local uses another file to start up local stuff, and it reads it from a file. I opened that file, and it was empty except for comments. So maybe it is whatever goes after local that is the problem. Then I might be able to diagnose this better. Thanks
Oh and btw, after I did my latest recompilation of the kernel, alsa does not give error messages when I boot up, in fact i believe it says module loaded or something like that.... so it's not alsa... now I just need to get booted to enjoy the sound! |

Great at least we near to fix your problem. btw make sure to include your user to the audio group or only root will be able to hear something.
For the local I'm a bit stuck on this one anyone have an idea....
Are you sure there nothing in the file local use to read the stuff. maybe you put something without knowing it. I know it sound silly but it happen to me several time. |

I looked in /etc/conf.d/local.start and there was nothing except comments.
Do you know what starts after local? That might help, because I can find that file and read through and see what causes the message to output. |

Hmmmm..... when I wait a while, they all repeat. Then when I ctrl+alt+del before the message "Sending the TERM signal..." I see something like "switching to runlevel 6" and I booted up my roommates debian box and i saw it say INIT: Entering Runlevel: 2
The init looks familiar...... I wonder if I can find that file that has the default runlevel in it if i change it I will get anywhere... i just gotta find that file. |

check this out. I looked in /etc/inittab this is what I found:
# System initialization (runs when system boots).
#DE:S12345:respawn:/sbin/devfsd /dev -fg
# Script to run when going single user (runlevel 1).
~~:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin
si:S:sysinit:/sbin/rc boot
l0:0:wait:/sbin/rc shutdown
l1:1:wait:/sbin/rc single
l2:2:wait:/sbin/rc nonetwork
l3:3:wait:/sbin/rc default
l4:4:wait:/sbin/rc default
l5:5:wait:/sbin/rc default
l6:6:wait:/sbin/rc reboot
z6:6:respawn:/sbin/sulogin
# TERMINALS
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
c2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux
this is what is "respawning" too quickly. Dont know what to do though. |

Do you have this entry in /etc/inittab ?
before this section
#System initialization (runs when system boots).
#DE:S12345:respawn:/sbin/devfsd /dev -fg
# Script to run when going single user (runlevel 1).
~~:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin |
