1.2 -> 1.4 update-step2 scripts dies

I tried the 1.4 update scripts, and the step2 script dies emerging gcc3.2:

make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.2-r1/work/build/zlib'
Bootstrapping the compiler

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfuly.

!!! (no error message)

I updated the arch variable for step2 script, cleaned out the /var/tmp/portage directory per the script readme, and script 1 ran fine. Any ideas?

Best idea:

Don't use the update scripts. honestly it's problematic, and a bad way to approach this IMHO (I voted to not give an update script cause of all the problems t will cause people).

my reccomendation is reinstall the new version from start (after you do some backups). it has proven to be much much better in the end

I used Hybrid Major Gentoo Upgrade Process on my PowerBook, and was quite happy with the results.

Ok, I'll do a fresh install. Is there any noticeable diff between the stage 2 and 3 ppc (non-g3) 1.4rc1 tarballs? I can't imagine there being THAT much mac hardware, so I figured I'd grab the Stage 3 to save some time.

I took Gerk's advice and blew away the 1.2 and started fresh with 1.4.

FYI, a bug was posted and a portage change was made, for others willing to try the update scripts.
