You could use a console IM , like the licq in console mode.
I don't know what gaim-remote is capable of

gaim-remote is a tool to give your gaim process certain commands.. (like shutting down) it does not offer a remote chat client :p

You could use "centericq" It's a console application for icq/msn/yim/jabber.

I used to have this alias in my bashrc file:

Code:
alias scentericq='screen -d -R -S "centericq" centericq'

This creates (or re-opens) a screen with centericq in it. You can hide it with Crtl+A+D, and trying scentericq again restores the screen.. (just don't forget you left it open ;)) A perfect tool to use with ssh imho.

yeh i think that would work.In fact i was thinking more like a remote tool that i use throug a webrowser (like vnc-java) .For instance having the look of the web-java-yahoo-messenger. But now with centericq , i just need to install a web-console and put it on my website and from there use screen and reattache it .

thx

You have take a look at mindterm

But if you find something smaller/lighter, please let me know.. It's not funny to download 700K for a ssh-applet.. ;)

BitlBee http://www.bitlbee.org/ is a very smooth IRC Gateway for MSN / ICQ / Jabber / Yahoo.

Basically your IM users look like normal IRC users when you connect to a bitlbee server using a any standard irc client.

The best thing about Bitlbee is that you do not even need a irc client! Simply use one of the web-based cgi-irc Bitlbee servers:

http://bitlbee.pethippo.co.uk/
http://cgi.bitlbee.org/
http://im.everdot.org/

It is quite easy to run your own Bitlbee service too. A quick userguide can be found here:

http://linuxreviews.org/software/irc/bitlbee/

Bitlbee supports IPv6. The various protocols are USE flags. It is possible to set your Bitlbee server to be private (i.e. requires password).

what about ssh? forwarding x?
These days most IM's store the configs in the servers so installing an IM client isn't too bad. Unless your in a situation where you can't install one :)
