My gentoo is kernel 2.4.24 for SPARC on Sun Ultra 10 Workstation.

I met a serious problem now:
After running for a log while, for example 24 hours, the OS will has not any reponses: can not login via network, can not login at local console, the keyboard and mouse is dead. It seems OS has dead!

I want to know what's wrong with it, and how can I get the detail error message? Is system log helpful to me?

About 6,172 things could be wrong with it, from hardware faults to overheating issues to kernel bugs. Without more detailed info I doubt anyone could tell you more than "Hm, yup, it doesn't work."
As to the system logs - well, take a look at them right after you reboot. Scroll up to right before where the kernel boot messages start - that's where the logs left off before you hard-cycled the machine.

Well, they don't really have log entries like:

Code:

21 may 2004, 1:47 PM: kernel: The OS died because of a bug in the module 3c509.o. Please email the maintainer of this module on foo@foo.com

Although that would be good :)

You might get some info from /var/log/messages. Logs are usually written to this directory... If it's an application issue, you might want to take a look in the specific app log

was wondering why you used the SPARC kernel, then I read your first post :) :)

The only thing I can see is

Code:

May 11 16:37:45 sunoo modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.24-sparc-r2-up/modules.dep (No such file or directory)

Is 2.4.24 the kernel you're running? (uname -a)
Your symlink might be pointing in the wrong direction...

Have you done "make dep" during kernel config?

ok, try this

Code:

cd /usr/src/linux
make dep && make modules && make modules_install

Hope this works

Moved from Installing Gentoo, you should get more help here.

I am not sure from this what your current status is, but here are a couple comments.

  • Your kernel is a little out of date (but that is unlikely to be the source of the problem).
If you are going to rebuild it, you might want to "emerge sparc-sources" first, and build
    2.4.26;
  • I have seen problems like you describe, but very infrequently. In my case, they seem to
    be heat or power related.
  • This looks like a new install? That's about the only way you could get that kernel, not have it's modules installed, and not have the time zone set yet?

I don't imagine this helps much, but it might give you some ideas.
Regards,
