When trying to emerge KDE or the ALSA sound system, the compile fails with the same error everytime. Anyone know what's causing this?

Code:
make[2]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/alsa-driver-0.9.0_rc2/work/alsa-driver-0.9.0rc2/'
make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_trident] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/alsa-driver-0.9.0-rc2/work/alsa-driver-0.9.0rc2/pci'
make: *** [compile] Error 1

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line -14, Exitcode 2
!!! Parallel Make Failed

I have a Sound Blaster Live! installed (and the EMU10K1 module loaded) and NO onboard sound. It's hard to read because the compile data scrolls so fast, but it did say something about installing ALSA for use with all soundcards. Is there a command argument to limit this to just my particular soundcard?

Grab the release candidate 5 source from http:/www.alsa-project.org
and compile it yourself.
I'll bet it works then.
If not the post to the alsa-user mailing list.

Apparently you cannot have any sound card support compiled in your kernel. In the menuconfig, just choose * on the sound card support, but don't choose any cards.
I haven't managed to get to the point in my install where I compile Alsa (problems with KDE and XFree 4.2.1), but my Gentoo Guru buddy told me that was my problem with my previous 1.2 installation.

not sure if you are following the gentoo alsa guide here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/alsa-guide.html
but as Shadow mentions you have to be careful about how you build the kernel to get things working - its counter intuitive really but you should just have sound card support loaded as a module and deselect all the drivers.
The guide worked for me with a CMI8738 based PCI sound card.

Okay, I spent hours and hours recompiling the kernel with several different combinations of sound support (current kernel even has the soundcore installed as a module). ALWAYS failed in the same place. I finally decided to try defining the "ALSA_CARDS" variable. (I didn't want to do this because if I switched soundcards all I had to do is install the module for it, instead of recompiling anything. Now I have to recompile ALSA. =( ) Well, it worked. ...sorta'.

After spending 24 hours compiling KDE the build eventually gives me an error and fails to complete. ARRR
Code:
xftint.h:392: parse error before '*' token.

Between work and sleep, I have to keep starting all my compiles before I do either because I don't have time. My network server has been down for too long now and unless someone knows what's causing this problem or unless I can fix it this week... I'm going to have to say the heck with Gentoo. I'm not going to spend a whole DAY just to try 1 new combination and waste weeks on this.
