Hi All,

I've done a vast search in these forums and on google, but I cant seem to find a solution to solve my problem. I've tried quite a few things, but have resorted back to the original settings layed out in the install guide on this site, however when i boot up and it loads silo fine, but when it starts loading gentoo i get this:

Code:
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
  Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

My fstab looks like this:

Code:
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda4 /usr ext3 noatime 0 0
/dev/hda5 /var ext3 noatime 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 noatime 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 0 0
none /proc/openprom openpromfs defaults 0 0

I do have /dev/hda3 as my Wholedisk partition, does this need to be listed in fstab?

My silo.conf is as follows:

Code:
partition = 1
root = /dev/hda4
timeout = 100
image = /boot/kernel-2.4.26
  label = linux

Is there anything wrong here?

Thanks in advance!

Comm.

I'm no expert, but I do not see where you loaded root ... are you sure the first line of your fstab should not be:
Code:
/dev/hda1    /    ext2    noatime    0 1

Here is what my fstab (minus the comments) looks like and it's working great:
Code:
/dev/sda1               /               ext3            noatime                 0 1
/dev/sda2               none            swap            sw                      0 0
/dev/sda4               /var            ext3            noatime                 0 2
/dev/sdb1               /home           ext3            noatime                 0 2
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         noauto,ro               0 0
/dev/fd0                /mnt/floppy     auto            noauto                  0 0
none                    /proc           proc            defaults                0 0
none                    /proc/openprom  openpromfs      defaults                0 0
none                    /dev/shm        tmpfs           defaults                0 0

Also, maybe you did intend to have a separate boot partition which is fine, but if so you willl also need a root partition. The problem looks to me to be from the fact that it cannot access /etc/inittab. If you notice, based on the filesystems you load it has no way of accessing /etc/.

I hope that's helpful. I know others have sure helped me in this forum.

Ok, so should I point silo.conf to /dev/hda1 not /dev/hda4?

Thanks,

To my understanding, you should set root equal to wherever you've mounted root. Of course when I say root, I mean just plain / ... /usr is where lots of program data goes ... you are definately going to need a root partition as well considering that any directories you don't have explicitly mounted elsewhere will go onto that filesystem. For one /etc where all the configuration information gets stored is on the root filesystem (as well as /lib, /tmp, /bin, /sbin ) .... The problem you're running into is that it can't load init .... init is located in /sbin which you do not have since you have no filesystem to store it in, and init is going to need access to /etc/inittab which it would not have access to either .... I hate to say it but you may have to start over on the install and repartition your disk to include a root partition.

my silo.conf looks like (cross refernce with my fstab above if you like):
Code:
partition = 1
root = /dev/sda1
timeout = 10

image = /boot/kernel-2.4.26
     label = linux

No problem, but based on your fstab it looks like you're going to run into more problems later on because for the life of me I don't see how it will save to a root partition. But good luck anyways. :wink:

TIA.
