Thought you folks might want to know, as it is relevant to other ati cards that come with macs...I used info from these pages:
Basically, I downloaded from CVS what this guy told me to:
http://www.retinalburn.net/linux/index.html
and then compiled and installed as this suggested:
http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIcompile.html
That got me working DRI. Of course, there are a few problems with this--it means you have an X installed outside of the portage system, and I guess it's basically beta (or not even...) code. But it works, and my desktop is _much_ snappier now. Very noticeably--2d and 3d. And theoretically with this guys patch you can also get XVideo and TV out with the gatos ati.2 driver, but I haven't ventured that far yet...soon. Maybe once I try that I'll attempt to set up an ebuild using this stuff...
Let me know if you want specific config info for XF86Config file. I'm going to write my experience up soon and put it up, but in the meantime I'll help as much as I can if anyone wants to try this as well. The dri-users list is also really great, BTW--very helpful nice folks.
