That's about $3200 total. Let's see if we can get it up some more :)

That's just the people who feel like posting how much they donated

Although, there could be a person or two that didn't actually donate and said they did (I wouldn't really expect this from the gentoo community but you never know).

Just want to say thanks - gentoo is cool

Warning - Bit of maths
At time of posting there are 52,385 forum members
Presuming half of these forum members are no longer active for some reason or another or are unable to donate that leaves 25,000ish
$20,000 debt = 80 cents each which kinda invalidates the unable to donate as 80 cents is spare change for most people....

Cmon people - thats a LOT cheaper than windows....

Is there somewhere we can see how much there has been donated, and how much there is still needed?

Hint, hint this is a good idea...

Humans like to have goals... humans *really* like to do good things when they can see progress. Appreciation of progress is hardwired into us.

Now, my entire reason for donateing was not to meet a goal; but it would make a lot of people feel really good about the community (as if they don't already) if we could see this one to the end. I'm not afraid to say that I'd like to know where we are as well.

I think alot of us feel that we are taking care of a friend having a hard time, it would bring an element of relief to know that we helped Robbins break even for all the work he did on the project. (Regardless of your personal opinions of Robbins... he *was* the visionary behind this wonderful distro / philosophy)

Just imagine... we might get a positive posting on /. too. ;-) Ha! what am I saying... this act of kindness will most likely translate to "Gentoo Cult Raises fund for fallen evanglist" - have I mentioned how much I dislike /.? :-D

I'm not really sure whether buying from the shop counts as a donation. I bought an installation CD last week, which was $20, excluding the $3 P&P. I guess it's still a contribution:-\

It has been mentioned that Mr. Robbins does get a 'profit' from the store to pay for his living etc, so yes, buying from the store is also contributing.
It's just not the full amount that makes it to him because he also needs to produce the cd's and shirts etc. but it still helps.

He has been working for 80 hours a week on Gentoo so I don't think he had much time left for any other job.
That's why he got into this financial problems.

All this is just what I heard and read, mainly in this thread. If it really interests you, read trough it, it's only 10 pages or so.

Well, if somebody could get in touch with him, and find out if it would be possible to make a site with some info and donated/missing $ values :P

I have seen communities like Sharereactor etc. collecting 8000$ in about a week, shouldn't we be able to do the same?
I currently don't have the money for donating, but I have bought a T-shirt and a few cd's from the store :)

If somebody could talk to Daniel and ask what he thinks of the idea, after all, it is his hard work that started this great distribution and community.

I think that $1 from people who use the distribution would be way to say thank you to Mr. Robbins for his hard work. He has been very unselfish with his time and effort and $1 shouldn't break anybody's bank. Maybe a moderator should post a sticky post at the top of the forums that shows where the donation button is (an explaination too). The donation button (paypal) icon on the main page makes it very easy. Many hands makes for light work.

Cheers,

Bob

I don't think even half of the registered users on this forum are active anyway.

The idea of about $20 per person is better since that means that every donater would pay for 20 others, and so only 1000 have to donate instead of 20,000 which is a much more feasonable goal I think.
Seeing a lot donated even more than $20, the current pace is quite allright if it continues for a while.

Children of the Revolution:

This is absurd. How many lazy morons and criminals reap tons of money for doing nothing or for being very destructive to others and the planet? And a hard working man like Daniel Robbins who contributed so much to the community should have to worry about how to sustain his family?

It seems the only reason he has to drop his work at Gentoo is for financial reasons! Something is going VERY wrong here. But the good news is: We can do something about this injustice.

The man deserves to be a MILLIONAIRE!! I hope your donations will keep flowing until we have made that goal!

(Throwing in my 30.- US$ as soon as my PayPal registration is through)

I'm with the previous post. If all of the forum members chucked in around $1 each, that'd more than cover Daniel's debt. Even if some members aren't active, some will chuck in more, some will pay less, so it'll average out eventually.

There really needs to be a link to this from the front page. Mr. Robbins deserves a reward for his hard work (as well as the other devs, of course).

Just donated $20.-- Daniel you rock my boxen, I hope we can help you repay some of your debts.

A question though: how do we make sure that these donations are going directly to Daniel and not to any other Gentoo-related cause? I want my $20, small as they are, to take his debt from $20,000 to $19,980, because debt really sucks, and that's $20 less he'll have to pay interest on for the next 30 years.

Thanks Daniel, for your contributions and sacrifices. You were a leader and a role-model to us all, and I hope you take the time to read this thread, and buy yourself and your family dinner with our donations before paying off your debts.

COME ON PEOPLE! We've gotta make this man RICH!
