Gentoo Speed performance on laptop

Well, I finally got Gentoo successfully installed on my Dell Latitude laptop with networking. I have DSL so along with the speed of my laptop (P3, 1.2ghz), things run very quickly.

One thing I noticed is that if I am not connected to my DSL connection, things run VERY VERY slowly as if it is polling. Has anyone experienced this and is there something in the Kernel that has to be changed to prevent this from happening?
