My eclipse works fine with following setup:
gentoo 1.4-rc1 with gentoo kernel
sun-jdk-1.4.0 compiled from source using tips found in this forum
eclipse swt-libraries compiled from source (don't know if this is mandatory)
Sun's jdk does not work with gcc3. It has to bee built from source. It crashes because it cannot fiend correct versions of shared libraries.
You don't need to compile the whole eclipse because it is mostly java and does not depend on the gcc produced binaries but depends on JRE/JDK. |

don't know if that is correct.
eclipse was the only problem I had, all other java-apps worked just fine (LimeWire, ...) with Sun's jdk.
Today I emerged sun-jdk-1.4.1.01 and eclipse seems to like it, have no problems till now.

Yes, sun-jdk-1.4.0.01 works out-of-the-box and seems to me now that the previous versions did too. Is it that you only need to compile sun-jdk to get a java-plugin for mozilla? |

Yes, if you compile mozilla yourself the precompiled java-plugin will not work.
I still use the binary version of mozilla, have no troubles with java-plugin.
