I've run into a slight problem. I did:

and it seems to have deleted the copy of glibc that I use for gimp 2 and Evolution. I try running them and I get this error for Gimp: | Code: | gimp-remote-2.0 %U

and when I try evolution I get:

How do I fix this? And more importantly How did I break it? Both were working fine before I did an update.

I have same problem but no idea how fix it. I emerged system (emerge -u system) and then glib gones somewhere  And now i cant use least nano editor...

Great... Nano doesn't work for me either. Could probably get quite a list going of things that don't wanna work.
Come on Linux Guru's.. Give us an answer or a hint towards which of the 287 messages regarding GlibC apply to this problem.

glibc-2.3.3 isn't even out yet, that's still in beta (and is what you use in the ~x86 branch). So I've no idea where it's getting 2.3.4 from.
However, if you do:

revdep-rebuild |
You should hopefully get somewhere. If you can, and if the above doesn't work, you should do this:
| Code: | | emerge --oneshot glibc |
And if that doesn't work:
| Code: | emerge -e system
emerge -e world |
Good luck - I hope the first one, and if not then the second one, works - the third one will take a while...

I haven't rebuilt the kernel, and since I don't think -Ud would create new kernel headers. (At least I hope it doesn't.) The main reason I'm using the bleeding edge versions is that I use Gnome 2.6, and everythime I think they're removed the Gnome2.6 from the beta, it reverts me back to v.2.4.

What does the -e mean? I've read the man emerge and emerge --help, but both of them sound a little confusing. Does it mean that it removes all the glibc links and rebuilds everything using only 1 glibc? If so what happens with the applications using a newer version then it chose?

"-e" means "--emptytree" which, despite what it tells you in "man portage", will recompile everything either in your system profile or in your world profile, dependencies included. I find that it's a good idea to do this every now and then anyway, so that packages that don't get updated very often can take advantage of new features in new releases of glibc and the kernel headers.
Is anyone having these problems not using "-U"?

Well then you need to sort out your /etc/portage/package.keywords then. At a guess, when installing gnome-2.6, you'll have done the following:

Now, this isn't the best idea. In fact, it's a bad idea! You will need to create entries in /etc/portage/package.keywords for each and every dependency gnome has. If you look at the gnome ebuild itself, it lists all the dependencies.
That said - did "emerge -e system" fix your problem for you anyway, or not?

Unfortunately not. I still get the same error when I try to run evolution, nano, or Gimp 2. I'm guessing they were all run with the Accept_keywords="~x86". So if I add the entirety of the Gnome 2.6 dependencies to the package.keywords it may allow me to run the emerge -e world?

Yes, that's right - personally, I would repeatedly try to do an "emerge -e world" and note which packages need the unstable version in order to allow you to do this, and do it one by one like that.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind after I rebuild the system.. I think I terminally hosed it. Thought I was in /var/tmp/portage when I did rm -R *.... Was actually in /usr/portage.
Is there any way to recover? I tried emerge-websync, and emerge sync and emerge rsync..
emerge websynbc says is succeeded now do emerge sync.. Emerge sync goes straight into emerge rsync which leaves this message:

EDIT1: I untared the portage tarball to /usr and it seems to be taking the emerge sync fine. Now if they don't ban me for rsyncing tooo many times in the last couple hours I may survive.. Next step.. See if I can sort out the problem that started all this. How can evolution, nano, and Gimp 2 need something that doesn't exist??
EDIT2 I spoke too soon.. emerge rsync ends with a bunch of missing files and unable to patch messages. When I try to update portage, it gives this:

UPDATE
Managd to get it so it almost works.. Fighting with a DEPENDS/DEPENDS* problem in regards to LibPerl.. But trying an emerge sync like another thread suggested, and am hoping.
Wish me luck after untaring a portage tarball, recopying distfiles, relinking a virtual link, banging my head off my CPU, and finally getting a sorta fix running.. I'm getting tired.

Check for syntax error or corruption in the ebuild. (--debug)

Ok, first advise: Never downgrade glibc
As you've seen, this breaks your whole system. I'll see if I can finally get my error-out-on-glibc-downgrade patch in the tree, but always remember this lesson.
So, now I'm not entirely clear: did you solve your glibc problems and have only a portage problem now or do we fight multiple problems ? |

No.. when I try to run nano, evolution or Gimp 2, I get | Code: | | nano: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.3.4' not found (required by nano) |
and variants of that for the others. Now I'm being killed on two fronts..

That could be a problem... I don't have a /packages in /usr/portage
Next stupid question.. How do I get that back? Snapshot, distfiles or stage?

No problem, it's normal to not have that dir unless you use FEATURES=buildpkg, I only checked the little chance that you might have backup packages, unfortunately this isn't the case.
Can you provide the output of

I can't start the Gentoo back up to try.
Seems that after booting out of Gentoo it doesn't want to let me back in. Endless errors on the filesystem. fsck.jfs claims to fix them, but then it gives the same errors.
<shrug> A good day to re-install I guess. 
EDIT1: And when you do get to the commandline, all users appear to be deleted.. Including root. No password, no username...
