I am not sure how many ppl have had this problem, but I thought I should post the issue.
I have a SparcStation 5 with 192 MB ram, and I was trying to install gentoo 2004.1 on it. I was following the handbook step for step, but the install broke when I tried to unpack stage 1.
It gave me an error saying that it was unable to create ./proc/.keep or ./root/.keep
I tried it a couple of times but each time the unpacking broke. Finally I unpacked without executing the following steps from the handbook
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
When I did this, the stage unpacked perfectly, with .keep in /proc. Currently, I have just started the bootstrap, shall post if I run into any other issues.
Any insight into this particular problem would be appreciated.
Regards,

Hi there- I think you're about half-right. It sounds like it didn't like overwriting directories that were already present. I'd say unpack the tarball, THEN do your mounting inside of /mnt/gentoo.
Either way, you're still going to need to (eventually) mount proc somewhere where your chrooted environment has access to it.
Good luck! |
