Gentoo 1.4_rc1 / Dual G4 / XFree 4.2.1 emerge problems

I'm having an issue installing the XFree 4.2.1 package under Gentoo PPC. When I run the emerge kde or emerge x11base/xfree it builds for about 2 or 3 hours then gets to the install section of the make and gives me about 3 pages of errors and stop with an error that says:

In function 'XftConfigSubstitue'
'p' declared (first use this function)
blah blah
'FcMatchPattern' undelclared (first use in this function)
'FcMatchFont' undeclared (first use in this function)
*** [ xftcfg.o] Error 1
Leaving /var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.1/work/xc/lib/Xft

It then dies with an error 2 exitcode 2. I have the following set under make.conf

USE = "X cups"
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=7400 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -mpowerpc-gfxopt -fsigned-char"

Anyone have any ideas on this problem? Sorry I can't give an specific file names as I am running an ATI128 with the Studio Display 17 and the far left hand side of the screen is cut off using video=aty128fb:vmode:20 on bootup.
