Well here's my idea for forcing them to use just the web browser although I'm not sure about locking them into just a single webpage if that's what you wanted. If you run it without a window manager, then you just have to disable console switching and ctrl-alt-backspace and that's it I think, unless you have any other key combos that do something that would let them out. Then write a script that checks to see if Mozilla (or netscape) is running and runs it if it isn't, just in case they "file->quit" or it crashes. After doing this the only way you can do anything to the system if by ssh'ing into it.

Stand behind them with a baseball bat and when they look like they are going to close the window, kindly ask the punks if they are feeling lucky. 8)

See standard answers below. Specifically, try searching google which should turn up this link that covers Netscape 4 as well as this one that covers mozilla.

Ok, but i still close the window...
I'm looking for a code that will not let me close the window....maybe a bash script that will load netscape when the user closes it:

var=ps -d |grep netscape
if[ var="" ]
then
/usr/local/netscape/netscape
fi

it works?

To do something like this, you'll have to write a daemon that continually polls a process ID to see if its still alive. If it's not, then the daemon should re-launch the process. I suppose you could also do it by writing a script that launched mozilla and, upon receiving a termination code, (meaning the browser closed) relaunches it. Not sure that would work, however, and I'm certainly not sure how to write it.

As an alternate solution, can't you just give the students a window manager that has nothing else except a link to mozilla/netscape? Then, who cares if they close out of the screen -- they can't do anything else except re-launch the browser.

that'd work.

and for the Xsession listing, you can use that script name instead of the window manager.

Run KDM, and setup automatic passwordless login for a user who has access to netscape only ;)

You haven't given a reason why something like what arkane or myself suggested won't work. If you create a window manager that only has access to a web browser, then so what if the user quits out of it. They can't do anything else except relaunch it.

If there really is a good reason why you have to have the browser always up, then I've told you how to do it -- write a daemon that stores the pid of the browser and continually monitors for the status of that pid. If it goes away, relaunch it.

You're going to have to do some window manager hacking anyway, since you'll need to disable the ctrl-alt-delete combination. (unless, of course, you don't care if users reboot the machines)

if it doesn't has to be netscape, search google for "konqueror kiosk mode", as I suppose kiosk-mode is what you want...

This just loads the page but does not keep it UP.
