I've finally got sound working in KDE, thanks to all the help in this thread and lots of other places. I've done about every tweak I've seen, and I had only one remaining error: in dmesg I got
Code:

Real Time Clock Driver v1.12
via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample rate.
Please try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option
and report if it works on your machine.
devfs_mk_cdev: could not append to parent for sound/audio

so (for reasons that now escape me) I got rid of all my sound-related modules with rmmod, and then deleted everything in /dev that was remotely sound-related. When I rebooted, some of the entries in dev were recreated although not all, and the error had gone away.

The snddevices script that comes with alsa-driver seems to create a whole heap of devices that don't seem to be useful. Could this be a problem?

Anyway, the real solution came when I was looking in KMix. I could get a click from my speakers if I muted/unmuted the PCM channel, as long as the master was unmuted with the volume turned up. No system sounds would play however, and xmms would lock up for about 30 seconds when I tried to play anything through it.

I started to fiddle with the VIA DXS sliders, and all of a sudden a bunch of sounds started playing. And yes, I did have the speaker volume set pretty high at the time... 8O

It seems that the DXS sliders are controlling options rather than levels? With them set to zero, not only was there no sound, but the sounds were blocked and waiting. Very strange. Now, I have the 3 '3D' sliders set to minimum, the first two VIA DXS sliders set to maximum and the other two set to minimum, and both system sounds and xmms are working well.

Not ideal, because I still don't understand what's going on, but at least I've got sound. I'll be looking into this whole "DXS" thing! Of course, now KDE is making noises at me whenever I do anything and I'm almost pining for the silence again...

Yeah, I've got another sound just stopped working story... I managed to get it to work by downgrading to lib and utlis .9.8 with kernel 2.6.1-gentoo for a while in kde, after logging out and back into sound went away. Also, even when I manage to find the 10 minute window with working sount noatun refuses to output any sound, kaboodle on the other hand plays just fine. But of course this is only in the couple minutes I catch it and make it work for 10 more minutes. Whatever I'm doing to fix it here and there isnt very consistant either. Also nothing ever complains about not being able to output sound.

Oh yeah, I've got a sblive using the emu10k1 driver, things were working pretty decent with kernel 2.4 although i never figured out what type of sound system i was in fact using (sound just worked i never merged any alsa-drivers, libs or utils) Sound was also working pretty good in 2.6.0.

Anyone had any luck getting ALSA to run on kernel 2.6 w/ a ESS Maestro 3i.
I emerged alsa-utils, but when I run
Code:
amixer set Master 100 unmute
my speakers go crazy. They start spewing some god awful noise that I
can only compare to my fire alarm and I'm forced to logout to stop it.
Anyone know what's going on or how to fix this?

By any chance do you have module-init-tools-3.0_pre6 or pre7 installed?

You want to downgrade back to module-init-tools-3.0_pre5

A bug report has been filed https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39397

*Sigh* Should have read that message earlier. Solved my problem by downgrading to pre5. Had tons of errors like the following:

snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_opl3_create
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_mpu401_uart_interrupt
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_mpu401_uart_new
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_opl3_hwdep_new
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_opl3_create
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_mpu401_uart_interrupt
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_mpu401_uart_new
snd_cmipci: Unknown symbol snd_opl3_hwdep_new

I got alsa working in kernel 2.6.1.

my system

kernel 2.6.1 gentoo-dev-sources
Hercules Fortusimose III Sound fusion cs46xx
nforce 2 board (non-deluxe) with sound disabeld)

build kernel with also and alsa-oss as a module
emerge alsa-utils (this will emerge alsa-lib)

there is a script in /usr/src/linux/script
called MAKEDEV.snd.
run it, it wil make your dev

you dont need add rc-update add alsasound boot, remember to run alsamixer to set the control
for your volume!.

for xmms emerge xmms-alsa

Succes

You don't need to make your devices, as Gentoo (currently) uses devfs.

The point of the alsasound boot script is that it loads/saves your settings without you having to use alsamixer.

Also, when I run aplay, it gives me the message

"ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: No such file or directory
aplay: main:502: audio open error: No such file or directory"

What could be wrong?

EDIT: Solved.

I'm getting that same error. How did you fix it?

Gentoo's ALSA Guide should get you up and running. 2.6 is marginally different, but I've used the guide for 2.4 reliably on several systems.

Although this question does not belong here (it's about 2.6 kernels!) I'll advise you always to recompile alsa-driver whenever you recompile a kernel. This is also stated in the ALSA guide.

Well your previous post clearly shows you are still running 2.4... If you had ALSA running under 2.4 and are trying to move to 2.6 then you'll have to completely remove ALSA (including alsa-driver, alsa-utils, alsa-tools) and start all over again for the 2.6 kernel.

I unmerged all the tools and then remerged them. Still getting the same output line. What else kernel-2.4 related I should move?

You should not simply re-emerge everything. Have you followed all instructions in the start of this thread and other relevant replies?

/EDIT: are you really starting up with the new (2.6 based) kernel? Type
Code:
uname -r
to check.

Well first I must say that you post quickly. Your first one was about 2.4, then you said you moved to 2.6 now it appears you haven't. I suggest you study the documentation in more detail before asking questions. Moving from 2.4 to 2.6 is not a simple task, since a lot is different. I cannot possibly tell you all the details.

If you search the forum you may also find lots of helpful hints.

Hi all,
I would like to use different/newer versions of the alsa-driver than are included in the 2.6 kernel. But I am having serious trouble getting them working.

I have sound enabled in my kernel, but not ALSA [alsa-driver will not compile with anything other than *just* sound enabled in the kernel!]. I can compile the alsa-driver ebuild, but get the same errors reported above when loading:
Code:
snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_timer_notify
snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_timer_interrupt
snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_timer_new
snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_lib_read
snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_hw_constraints_init
snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_hw_param_near
snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol _snd_pcm_hw_param_setinteger
snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_kernel_ioctl

for lines and lines and lines.

I also tried this:
Quote:
You want to downgrade back to module-init-tools-3.0_pre5

but that didn't do the trick either.

Suggestions?
Kernel version 2.6.4-ck2
ALSA drivers version 1.0.4-r1
TIA.

Helena, would you be kind enough to edit your first post (compile ALSA components as modules) so that newcommers are not misled? Thanks for the howto.

OK I inderstand your question. The trouble is I haven't done much with ALSA recently. Do you have suggestions?

I meant editing your first post in this thread to match your second post. In your first post you select Y for all the ALSA components. In the second post you select M, which is the correct thing to do, I presume.

Hello All,

First of all I'm pretty new, so I need some help.

I have exactly the same problem with my current attempt to install ALSA, but I am struggling to find the solution. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
