Just wondering when gnome 2.6 will be marked as stable. Or more probably is there anything stopping it from being marked as stable on x86?
Cheers |

I've was wondering that myself all last week and the week before. I finally took the plunge and unmasked the code. So far I've installed it on my Dell D600 laptop for work with no trouble and on my personal AMD 2700 machine. So far so good. I've noticed some good speed improvments. Especially at login and with Nautilus.

Look at all the bug complaints just here in the forums. Do you think it should be marked unstable? All hell would break loose for Gentoo Gnome users. |

Guess I'm one of the fortunate few with no problems....Or at least none that couldn't be fixed real easily.

I use Gnome 2.6 and also have no problems. It's just that that doesn't seem to be the case for a lot of other people. |

nautilus crashed too many times here. I hope gentoo developers will unmask it when gnome devs will fix some of this issues. |

I've had no problems with gnome 2.6....
I'd say the amount of problems for general users has dropped off considerably recently, as very few first page topics are related to gnome 2.6
Plus I haven't seen any changes in the gnome-2.6 ebuild in the last two weeks , maybe longer, that would make me think they are doing major work on it, thus leaving it unstable... but then again I am not a gnome maintainer for gentoo so what do I know.
it would be nice to have it in the stable branch already... |

More likely its just not the case for noisy people. I bet they have just as many problems with Gnome 2.4. I can understand gentoo being occasionally conservative, but it's clear that some packages receive different treatment. I think every time I've synced in the last few month's there has been a new version of the portage tools.
Mplayer is another great example. As if somehow broken beta .92 is better than much less broken beta 1.0pre3. In terms of video files supported, and frequency between crashes 0.92 is clearly inferior to any of the 1.0 pre series.
Ati-drivers, I could go on and on with examples.
Gnome 2.4 has well known bugs. 2.6 fixes them. That it has new bugs is an unfortunate reality, but not a surprise. |

2.6.1 should be officially released in a couple of days (a few packages are all ready starting to hit portage). Perhaps that'll clear up some of the issues people seem to be having. |

So I added gnome to packages.keywords so that I could get 2.6. Now, it seems that I can't emerge -uDv world without it trying to downgrade everything. I'm looking forward to 2.6 being in stable so that I don't have that problem. Is there a way around it? I'd rather not emerge -U.
BTW, Gnome 2.6 behaves fine for me as well.

I use:
Can't use the -D option or I get:
Code: | n1zhe david # emerge -uUDv world
Calculating world dependencies /
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy ">=x11-libs/pango-1.4" have been masked.
!!! possible candidates are:
- x11-libs/pango-1.4.0 (masked by: ~keyword)
!!! (dependency required by "x11-libs/gtk+-2.4.0" [ebuild])
!!! Problem with ebuild x11-misc/xscreensaver-4.14-r2
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.
!!! Depgraph creation failed.

Of course I could 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"', but then I would upgrade everything!!

I added all that to package.keywords. This way you don't need U (U is evil) and you can use D safely. _________________ I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want? |

I'm still kind a Gentoo newb. Where would 'package.keywords' be located/created?
Why is U evil?

I have a post in that thread with everything you need to know about the package.* files. U is evil because it doesn't always work as expected. I've run into many occasions back in the day where U would still show things that it wants to downgrade. I only found out about the "proper" way to do things a month ago and I've been using Gentoo a year so don't feel bad _________________ I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want? |

Did a 'emerge sync', then build an /etc/portage/package.keywords file with your suggested contents (from a few posts ago).
Now, when I do an 'emerge -uDvp world', the old spinner goes real slow then it spits out something like:
Code: | These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies |
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy ">=app-accessibility/gnome-speech-0.3.2-r1" have been masked.
!!! possible candidates are:
- app-accessibility/gnome-speech-0.3.2-r1 (masked by: ~keyword)
!!! (dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.6" [ebuild])
!!! Problem with ebuild gnome-base/gnome-2.6
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.
!!! Depgraph creation failed.
|
So I'll add it to the bottom of the list in /etc/portage/package.keywords like this:
Code: | `app-accessibility/gnome-speech-0.3.2-r1 `x86 |
I do another emerge -uDvp world and it gives me another fail. So I add that one in the same manner. And it goes on and on and on.....

Yup, you're gettin the hang of it. Imagine doing that over and over again to make that original thing I posted. TOOK FOREVER. Think Dori from Finding Nemo....
Just keep swimmin, just keep swimmin
One thing is -D will always make the dependency checking take forever and a day. A necessary evil unfortunately. _________________ I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want? |

I imagine it's a difficult call to make about when to unmask a package. I use only Gentoo for work, and I am completely dependent on my Gentoo system. Almost any upgrade of a few packages takes a few hours to get sorted.
If an app is buggy, I want the latest cutting edge version - why not? If something is working well, I want substantial improvements before I upgrade. I have just spent about 3 hours getting the latest version of mplayer to play a dvd. It was stupid to upgrade the thing.
These are not easy questions - for me or for Gentoo - but it would be interesting to know what standards are used to decide when to unmask a package. |

Been awhile sine I did a "D" because of the errors.
Thanks for the /etc/portage/package.keywords tip!

Maybe it is a bit early to mark it stable. I'm a KDE fan, but I saw some screenshots of gnome 2.6 and I was quite impressed, so I wanted to test gnome once again. Here's what I get when trying to emerge gnome: Code: | configure: error: Library requirements (ORBit-2.0 >= 2.4.0 gdk-pixbuf-2.0 >= 2.1.0 gtk+-2.0 >= 2.3.2 libgnome-2.0 >= 2.1.1 libgnomeui-2.0 >= 2.5.4 gnome-desktop-2.0 >= 2.1.4 gnome-vfs-2.0 >= 2.3.0 gnome-vfs-module-2.0 >= 2.1.3 libglade-2.0 >= 2.3.0 gconf-2.0 >= 2.6.1) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
!!! ERROR: gnome-base/gnome-panel-2.6.1 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 365, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

strange. after typing "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome" once again, the compiling went ok. Maybe the packages were not updated correctly, so that portage thought that the library requirements were not fulfilled, but they were. |

getting extremely antsy for gnome 2.6 to be unmasked!!!!!
glib-2.4 was recently unmasked... i'm assuming gtk+-2.4 will be unmasked at the same time as gnome? anyway, i can't wait _________________ http://wustlog.blogspot.com |

and to me this is un-acceptable personally. all that "Calculating Dependencies" can make u go crazy on a slower system. I dislike the whole keywords file all together...seems a bit pre-historic.
I was using gnome-2.6 with no issues excpet the whole upgrade thing. I finally got fed up and just went back down to gnome-2.4. Gentoo doesnt seem to handle a mixed system too well (mixed meaning a combination of ~x86 and non ~x86 packages). _________________ Mars Bitches!
