Grub die X-te ;-)

hallo,

ich bin ... ,verzweifelt und betriebsblind.
Es ist nicht die erste Gentoo installation, aber ich verzweifle an Grub.

Folgendes:
Installation nach deutscher Anleitung.

/dev/hda1 swap
/dev/hda2 boot mit ext3
/dev/hda5 / mit xfs

Nun wechsle ich in die chroot-Umgebung nach Anleitung.

Komisch ist, das in der chroot-Umgebung der mount Befehl KEINE! Ausgabe bringt und das df - Komando folgendes sagt:

df: cannot read tabel of mounted filesystems

ist das ok?

Nun starte ich grub.

grub>
grub>root (hd0,4)
Filesystem type is xfs, partition type 0x83
grub>setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no

Error 15: File not found
grub>

Wenn ich unter /boot/grub/ nach der datei stage1 & Co. suche ist alles da.

Wertet Grub ev. /etc/fstab und /boot/grub/menu.lst aus ?

Hi!

Ein Fehler, den mal viel zu leicht macht: root im grub heißt nicht gleich root Deines Linux ("Note that GRUB's root device doesn't necessarily mean your OS's root partition; if you need to specify a root partition for your OS, add the argument into the command kernel."). root im grub soll sozusagen auf die root-grub-Partition zeigen, in Deinem Fall also /dev/hda2, was für grub wiederum heißt:
grub> root (hd0,1)

Verwirrende Konvention. :-)

wieso soll ich root (hd0,2) angeben?
Das ist doch /dev/hda3 - die extendet Partition oder?
Und die Angabe der root - Partition ist doch erfolgreich gewesen.
Nur das schreiben in den MBR geht schief, mit setup (hd0) !?

Also nochmal. root (grub) soll auf deine boot Partition zeigen, nicht auf Deine root (linux) Partition. Das ist bei Dir /dev/hda2, also root (hd0,1).
Natürlich hat grub bei root (hd0,4) nicht gemeckert. Die Partition existiert ja. Es ist nur die falsche, weshalb es zum Folgefehler

Das Grub mit dem Befehl 'root' die /boot - Partition meint, ist ja nicht unbedingt 'normal' auf den ersten Blick - oder ?

Ich hab nun kein Grub menu zur Auswahl.

Kann aber durch Eingabe von

root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda5

mein System starten.
Ist meine /boot/grub/menu.lst richtig?

splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda5

Hi!

(Jetzt sitze ich gemütlich zu hause, ärgere mich über mein instabiles gerade wieder abgesürztes System und muß mit w3m posten.)

Wenn's von Hand geht, aber mit der menu.lst nicht, dann tippe ich mal auf Probleme mit dem splashimage. Laß die Zeile mit dem Image doch mal versuchsweise weg.

Hmm, es ist außerdem immer hilfreich, Grub auf ne Floppy zu packen, falls das mit dem installieren net so funktioniert hat (Beliebt: hängt mit Ausgabe Grub>). Wenn er das standard Grubmenu scho lädt ist es wohl nen Fehler mit Boot Partition.
Gerne gesehene Fehler sind:
1.) Platte wird im bios nicht als LBA erkannt (sondern als CHS, passiert manchmal wenn Platte schonmal benützt wurde) -> LBA forcen (Grub reagiert darauf böse allergisch, Lilo juckt das nicht wirklich und WinXX eh net)
2.) Wenn gar nix geht mal die ersten XX sektoren Nullen.
dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/hdX bs=512 count=XX (1000 hat sich bei mir meist bewährt) danach neue Partitionsinformationen drauf und bootfähig machen.
3.) SCSI Systeme mit Adaptec 2940 (mag auch bei anderen so sein)
und booten von IDE Platte
Wenn im SCSI Bios das aktive Suchen nach Geräten disabled ist, hängt das Booten direkt nacht der Meldung "Entpacke Kernel..."
Also Gerätesuche aktivieren und es geht (fragt mich nicht warum, ist bei nem halben Dutzend Adaptec Controllern passiert)
4.) Für alle die Dual Boot mit Windoof machen und das Windoof-Boot Menu haben wollen, bietet sich http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm an, damit kann man aus Windoof heraus die Bootsect. dateien machen.

Ich würd zum Testen immer das ach so tolle Splashbild weglassen
