Hi

I try install gentoo on Sun Fire v240,but have some problem.

I use LiveCD 2004.0 boot and install GRP is fine.

But,when I use "free" show the the memory size it has wrong.

The RAM total 2048MB on the machine.

When use "free" show total Memory should be 20xxxxx ,but just see total 12xxxxx.

Then I try compile and install kernel (vanilla-sources 2.4.25).....complete.

Reboot.

see SILO.

Load kernel.

see "Remapping the kernel.....done" message.

.......then it is hang.


Have anyone successful install gentoo on the Sun Fire v240 ?

Hrm, I'm not sure as to why Linux doesn't see all of the RAM in your machine. When you get your machine up, post the output of dmesg and perhaps we'll see something.

As for not being able to boot, are you using the serial console or do you have a monitor hooked up to the machine?

Thanks for your response.

I direct use the LiveCD kernel.

When booting.....

serial console

Kernel doesn't support loading to high memory, relocating...done.
Loaded kernel version 2.4.24
.....
.....then it can boot into system.

I found if just use 1GB memory on sunfire v240.

Then it work fine with kernel 2.4.x or 2.6.x.

Have someone know how to solve it?

I didn't understand exactly what did you do to solve the problem?
I've same hanging Gentoo w/ Sun Fire V240.
Please give more detailed explanation how to fix that bug.
Did you deinstall some memory, or changed memory position in slots or what?

Heh. A few minutes later I got the clue. %) I had 2Gb of memory on my Sun Fire.
After deinstalling 1 Gb I got the kernel loaded. Thanks!

same problem here, fresh ultrasparcIIIi, 2x 1,5Ghz, 2GB Ram
only see ~1,2G Ram. But i want to use the 2 Gigs!

Boot PROM sees 2Gs..

Maybe I have to config HIGHMEM in my new kernel? Or is this just for 2.6.x kernels (like on my desktop)?

i didn't see nething like that in /etc/kernels/kernel-config-sparc64-2.4.29-sparc-smp, so i guess 2.4 doesn't have that.

but lots of people here are having 2Gs apparently with no probs...

the machine is emerging system right now, seems ok (not crashing when compiling like mentioned by 19972005 in the above posts)

(and - my god - this thing is FAST...)

please help!

Hello,

The problem seems to be that the dual memory controller setup is not really working well under linux. Move all your memory to a single CPU and it will run well. If you split it, you will crash under high load. See the other V240 thread for more info.
