I haven't yet been able to get a good Gentoo install and am mystified as to why. When running emerge system, it apears as though no Perl libraries (the *.pm files) exist in the @INC path. In fact, the path itself didn't exist. I've gone back carefully through the install instructions, and it appears that I've done everything right up to that point. I've managed to get through much of it by creating one of the @INC path directories and copying the *.pm files from the /var/tmp/portage~ dir on the CD. This is painstakingly slow and requires that I re-run emerge system to find out what the next missing file in the @INC path actually is.
Is this a known issues and, if so, what's a quicker resolution than copying files from the cd? |

It's actually a couple of known issues, and I'm not sure which set of them you're having. This is a completely new installation, I take it. Can you try the following: Code: | # emerge sync
# emerge /usr/portage/sys-devel/perl/perl-5.6.1-r7.ebuild
# emerge -u perl
# emerge -u system |
5.6.1-r8 has some problems if there is no pre-existing perl on the system, and 5.6.1-r7 has some problems putting things in the wrong directories unless ExtUtils-MakeMaker is installed. If this procedure doesn't work, there are a few arrows left in the quiver, so please post again if you have more problems. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Everything worked fine up to the emerge -u system command. First, I coudn't get through to ibiblio, now the slang-1.4.5 package is showing as unavailable.
Wrote too soon -- it's downloading and installing slang right now. I'll get back to you ... |

Thanks, rac. Your suggestions did the trick. I'm in the midst of downloading the gentoo-sources kernel source and all is well.
I'm preparing to review Gentoo in the Lockergnome Penguin Shell newsletter (http://penguinshell.lockergnome.com/") over a two-week period beginning Wednesday (10/16). Your great help made it possible. |
