Hi people,
I'm having a pain-in-the-a** problem with xfree, and might have to do with my abit geforce 3 ti200 card.. I've lived happily with gentoo 1.1a and 1.2 as well as the recent 1.4 rc1.
Last week or so though, I've had nothing but crashes. No matter what kernel I seem to use, the problem persists. gentoo 2.4.19-r7, 2.4.19-r9 and 2.4.19-r10.
relevant options, I think : smp, mtrr, real time clock, agpgart on/off, dri off, framebuffer on/off
If I use the nvidia-kernel and glx drivers, X will crash upon loading X while the logo is supposed to appear.
If I use the nv driver, X loads but will crash at some point, forcing me to actually hit the reset button.
I've tried with and without agpgart and nvagp.
Used nvidia 1.0.2960-r1 and 1.0.3123 drivers.
This is bugging the hell out of me, I've reinstalled multiple times, with 1.2 and 1.4 rc1 using optimized CFLAGS as well as should-be-stable CFLAGS, leaving out most optimizations. Changing O3 to O2, but nothing has worked for me so far.
I really can't understand this problem, I've installed it in ways that worked before.. has some packages been changed in such a matter to cause this? or has my hardware become cranky ? ;(
About hardware, here is what I have :
Abit VP6 Apollo Pro 133A dual CPU board
Dual Pentium 3 866Mhz
512MB RAM
IBM 60GB IDE HD
Abit GeForce 3 Ti200 DVI 64MB
One thing is persistant, and that is the nvidia drivers, they -always- crash my X on startup now.
I'll be happy to post more details if anyone has some ideas, I feel like I've tried everything. Maybe some kernel option I keep adding in all the kernels that messes up my system. *sigh*
HELP! please.. |

Hmm, you say that eventually X crashes even when using nv driver. This leads ti the idea that maybe there's some problem with X Don't know.
Try check /var/log/XFree86.0.log for errors. At the worst case, try emerging xfree again. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

Using the nv driver will never crash X during startup, it will however crash some time after X has started. Always seems completely random.
Here is my log file :

Jeez, I mean.. wtf is this.. I just did a gentoo install from a 1.4rc1-pentium3-stage3 tar, built a standard kernel and emerged xfree and nvidia, setup xfree and when I try to load X it hangs just like before.. nothing I do can seem to remedy this, either some ebuild is fucked for my computer or.. *sigh* I don't know, as I've said, the nvidia drivers hang X instantly on load, and the nv driver let's me load X but might crash it 10 seconds later.
PS: 1.4 rc1 has worked plenty times for me in the past. |

I had some problem with gnome+nautilus crashing all the time at bootup or later. It had some problems using AA fonts, something in X I suppose. I resolved it by reinstalling xfree. |

It's a good thought, but I don't use gnome/nautilus, nor kde for that matter.. my environment of choice is fluxbox, a very clean wm.
Right now I'm doing mostly everything through regular console programs, I've gotten tired of getting hard crashes and loosing data forcing me to eventually reinstall.
Is there no one at all, that has a problem like mine? XFree86 4.2.0 with Fluxbox, and X will crash with only itself and fluxbox running.. provided I use the nv driver.
The nvidia driver is completely borked for me, I've tried both 2960 and 3123. |

Yeah, I have the same problem. My output from the XFreelog is exactly the same in the relavent sections. I decided to make the jump from another unnamed distro to Gentoo and I don't have X Does anyone have a solution or idea for this problem? Is more detail needed? |

Okay, after reading the forums for a bit and trying a number of things
I finally came up w/ something that works. I am using the 2960
version of the nVidia drivers. Even though I have an Athlon I told the
kernel configuration that I have a PIII to avoid the undefined
references problem. I still have no idea why the nv driver doesn't
work, but the nvidia driver does so I am happy. I didn't try the 3123
version of the nVidia driver b/c I have never had any luck w/ it even
under my previous distro and there were a lot of problems with it on
the forums. Some claim it is broken while it works for others. It has
been broken for me and I wanted to start emerging the rest of the
packages to get up and running so I quit playing around w/ X.
I don't know if my hardware matters or not, but it is:
Gigabyte GA-7VTX motherboard (KT266 chipset)
Chaintech GeForce4 Ti4200 |

As for the original poster, nvidia closed source drivers are known to choke on smp compiled kernels.
If you dont need 3D, try using the XFREE86 nv drivers.
Nvidia knows about the smp problem, and were supposed to fix it by now.... |
