This has been discussed pretty extensively in the gaming forum, iirc. Go check it out there.

( And for gods sake, avoid the 4MX, it's crippled. )

From my /etc/X11/XF86Config:

# This from my modules sections (near the beginning of the config file)

Section "Module"
Load "pex5"
Load "record"
Load "extmod"
Load "dbe"
Load "dri"
Load "glx"
Load "xie"
Load "xtrap"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "DRI" # If you don't add this, you will not have Direct Rendering
Mode 0666
EndSection

# End of this part

# Later on in the Device Section

Section "Device"
Driver "ati"
Identifier "Radeon"
VendorName "ATI"
BoardName "Radeon QD"
Option "AGPMode" "2"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

# End of this part

Identifier can be whaterver you want as long it jives with the rest of the file. I suppose the BoardName can be changed also. BusID can usually be skipped, but if you know it, put it in (hint: 'cat /proc/pci'). Do NOT set AGPMode to 4 even if your mobo supports it unless you like hard lockups :(

After restarting X, glxinfo and xdpyinfo should make for good reading. I'm no gamer, but my 21" Trinitron runs at 1600x1200@85hz with DRI support and plays DVDs without a hiccough.
