Hiya
I was curious about something. I'm emerging the openquicktime library to take a look at it, and I was wondering if there are any open players that play quicktime movies (granted thats a general statement, since some codecs are proprietary). Like for example, if I wanted to watch the Two towers preview, is there anything else besides the crossover plugin (which I can't afford right now) or wine on the windows executable (which hasnt really worked for me) that I can watch it in?
Just curious |

The issue of playback for quicktime movies (*.mov) comes not from the use of the quicktime libs ... but from a compression codac that Apple uses called Sorenson. The bad news is that currently there is no native linux software that will play ALL Sorenson type compression. The good news is that there is progress. First .. you can always use crossover (if ya like WINE). The plugin works ok .. just not the best preformace in the world. The other piece of good news is that XINE is slolwy making progress (app. they can now play back some Sorenson compressed movie formats .. mostly older types). So feel free to play around and find one that works for ya.

On a sidenote, if you really want to watch TTT trailer on Linux...
Although I haven't it working under Wine, there is software that will convert Quicktime movies (even newer Sorensen encoded ones) to mpg, check out the howto at:

It is also quite slow (at my P4M @ 1.6 Ghz) |
