PostPosted: Sat May 11, 2002 10:34 pm    Post subject: video card acceleration? Reply with quote

I have a voodoo3 3000 as a video card. its not that great or new, but it should get at least several fps when I run a 3d program of any sort. yet when I try tuxracer or billiardgl or quake3arena, i get about 1 fps, since it seems that 3d accel is not on. I've been trying things for a week now, and i have the tdfx.o module compiled and installed on my system, and I configured X to use it as the Driver. Yet no matter what I do, whether with dri enabled, i cant seem to get it to work! Does anyone have any clue? I am using Xfree86-4.2.0 on the newest kernel. Thanks a lot!

Heres My X log file:

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)

After inserting the module did you check to see if /dev/dri/* exists? You may need to add entries to /etc/devsd.conf or you may be able to mknod the correct device files - not sure.

i had one of those darn cards they work fine as soon as you get um working if i remeber right i had the same problem and what it turned
out to be was you have to pick one either DRI or GLX not both
you cant quote me on this but thats what i remember and i suppoed you compiled dri and the 3dfx module into the kernel right ?

ok well wish i could be more help .........

I was having a similar problem. DRI was enabled, all the log files looked like they were saying the same thing but tuxracer was still slowed down to a crawl.

I think the problem is with the libGL.so that's in use. If you run glxinfo, do you see

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: Brian Paul
server glx version string: 1.3 Mesa 3.4.2

If the server glx version string is Mesa, then your 3D games will run slowly. I fixed this buy doing installing the latest radeon drivers (I have a radeon). Then the "server glx version string" shows up as "SGI". Then, tuxracer runs normally.

OpenGL games seem to depend on mesa, which overwrites your libGL.so libraries (unless I'm doing something wrong). So if I unmerge mesa, it's emerged again when emerging tuxracer. Anyone know a way to prevent mesa from overwriting the runtime libraries?

on glxgears i get:
507 frames in 5.0 seconds = 101.400 FPS
489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.800 FPS
326 frames in 5.0 seconds = 65.200 FPS
326 frames in 7.0 seconds = 46.571 FPS

in glxinfo i get:

display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:

so the SGI thing is already there, but no direct rendering. its in my X config though. and compile in the kernel. what is going on?

Well thats not really helpfull rommel and also rather unlikely *but possible* if you let glxgears run in the default size without covering it up or resizing it smaller.

But to you Anonymous I would be willing to say you are getting 3d acceleration with those numbers and your card.

Anyone got any suggestions on what runs well under linux and under $100? Somewhere around 50+ fps for quake3?

lol...well i was just making the point...cuz after alot of useless time getting a radeon to work with dri under linux i was still disappointed....so a geforce is a good way to go in linux...it has the support from nvidia which has been really pretty rare in hardware

Well I just slapped a random figure off into the opera search bar and came up with this which is a damn good deal, but I'm more than sure if you looked around you could do better :)

hi
I have voodoo3 3 and quake3 runs around 50 fps
So that card isn't so bad and I think u should check dri.sourceforge.net 's troubleshooting section, it seems to me you're not using Xfree libGl.so

Hey. I was having the same problems with my Voodoo3 3000 in linux that you are having, i.e. no 3d accel despite having drm and dri being successfully loaded. I installed glide3 for linux and after that, I got perfect 3d acceleration.

Download the right glide3 drivers at http://dri.sourceforge.net/res.phtml

Hope this works, late.
