I am emerging xorg's xserver right now and am wondering what others experiences with it are. Are there any special configuration that need to take place to use it instead of XFree86? I will post my experience here once I have it.
EDIT: Sticky removed.

so far my experience has been perfect. All I did was un-emerge Xfree and then emerge X.org. I had to update a few FontPath enteries in /etc/X11/XF86Config (it will use that if there is no xorg.conf).
As a note, I use the binary nvidia driver and it still works fine. OpenGL is fine too. So far so good |

it worked like a charm here as well
in my experience better than xfree, since this
time i did not have to recreate my vico/artwiz
font dirs. |

Everything went fine except for glx.
I have ati-drivers (for the radeon 9800xt) installed.
With opengl-update ati, X started but 3D apps didn't work (X couldn't load glx). I fixed this with an opengl-update xorg-x11.
3D now works great, at same speeds as with the ati glx.
The X driver in the config is still the ati binary one. |

Seems fine here. Had some font trouble afterwards but got things looking back to what they were before now.
Only problem I seem to be having is KDE won't remember that my keyboard has Win keys. I can change the settings in the control center, and get it to say that the win keys are mod4 but if I log out of kde and start it again I lose the win keys.
this is what I have in my xorg.conf
Code: |
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "microsoftpro"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
|
I've also noticed the occaisional flicker and my first display (xinerama) went black for a moment a couple of times. It could be the blackening happening really fast that is causing the flicker.
Other than those things I don't see much if any differences. |

Is it possible to use the NVIDIA drivers with this release or do we have to wait for an update from nvidia? |

The nvidia drivers work fine, no need to re-emerge them or anything. Played a little AAO just to make sure and no problems. |

To begin with I noticed significantly faster startup times. The installation couldn't be more painless, though etc-update had to merge a couple hundred files. _________________ http://www.supernerd.com |

Maybe I'm just stupid or something, but I was trying to move to X.org's version, and I got stopped after unmerge XFree. Now emerge gives me an error like such...
ian@ratbert ian $ emerge

This occurs on two computers, my desktop which kind of needs a version of X (I can't turn this computer off for a bit now), and a server that had X on it just for kicks and as a backup incase I fried my other computer (been there, done that...). I'm not sure why this happened, but it's kind of a small problem. I do know there's a way to unpack a backup portage, but I'm still looking for that, so if anyone knows where that is let me know? |

I had the exact same problem; I'm not sure it was caused by unmerging xfree. It's bug 47105 at
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47105
I followed the advice from additional comment 3 and emerge works fine. I emerged xorg-x11, changed the font paths in XF86Config and everything works great.

Well, i had exactly the same problem. All i did was emerge sync and then emerge -C xfree.
Fix:
change line 3029 in /usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py.
From
if portdbapi:
To
if myportapi: |

Yeah, I found the fix right after I wrote that, ran into another problem right after though, go figure.
Code: |

Very strange, I don't get it. I even wiped out my distfiles (most were stale anyways) and it still didn't work.
I gotta go walk my dog though, so hopefully when I come back in 15 minutes someone knows more than I do about this? This isn't the first time I've had this problem, but it's so unfrequent, I forgot what I did last time... |

OK, hopefully last post I'll have to make here for a bit.
Tricked the ebuild into thinking it already had the files (which it did after I manually downloaded them). Rebuilt the digest. Currently emerging.
Hopefully this should be done in an hour or two now. |

Could you guys please post some snapshots?
It would be the best if you could post the snapshots of your WM under xfree and xorg-x11, respectively. So that we can see the differences between the two. Thanks. |

There is no difference. It would look the same, barring configuration changes/problems. |

This isn't so much as a huge difference as a official sign of a fork.
X.org, by releasing this fork, well, put a fork in the coffin of XFree. I'm oh so witty today...
While I haven't used X.org's version yet, from what I understand it's basically XFree86 4.4, but without the new license. The fact that they forked, and released something, shows that XFree86 is going to die, or be pushed to the side, in favor of the GPL'd solution. So while this current version doesn't have much, I expect great things from this fork in the not-so-distant future.
The only real reason to switch now is to anticipate the future, and make sure your system is setup correctly for when our new X masters make their move to take over our desktops . |

The xorg server is in no way, shape, or form, GPL'd. It's X11 licensed, as it should be |

The real reason to switch is because Xfree 4.4 is better than Xfree 4.3. Since this is a fork of 4.4 it would go to reason that it is also better than 4.3. It is hard/impossible to identify a difference in general use because there shouldn't be any. Ideally, however, it should be quicker, use less memory, more stable etc.. So far my experience is that it loads quicker. _________________ http://www.supernerd.com |

Err, same thing :p.
Or at least as far as most end users are concerned, especially high school seniors who finally have a much needed week and a half off and don't want to engage in any more thought processes than needed for basic functions .
I'll just stop talking now, this is making my brain hurt... |
