Basically you just emerged the quake 3 point release, the only other thing you have to do is....you need a copy of quake 3 and you take pak0.pk3 file and copy it to your /opt/quake3/baseq directory
then it should be rdy to go. oh and we need a new ebuild for quake3 for the latest point rlz...plx :D

I am not sure, but just open up a console and type quake3. Tell me if it works. Haven't played q3 on linux yet.

or type /opt/quake3/quake3

for mods type /opt/quake3/quake3 +set fs_game osp

/opt/quake3/quake3 +set fs_game threewave

etc

or just use wine and install ase, but thats totally different topic :D

First of all, read what the ebuild prints out after it emerged. It tells you to copy or symlink the pak0.pk3!

This has got nothing to do with being a script file (actually that "quake3" file is a shellscript but still). You can't just type in quake3 because the path to that file is not yet in your $PATH environment variable. That's why you have to give the full path to it. Obviously if you're in the q3 directory the full path is ./

After your next login you can just type quake3 because there's a script in /etc/env.d/ which adds the quake3 directory to the PATH environment variable.

Btw. you won't be able to play on every server right now, as a new pointrelease came out and many servers have switched already. Unfortunately it seems like the gentoo people don't want to include the new pointerelease ebuild *sigh*

It's no prob to run the new point release without an ebuild.
It comes with a nice installer.
And the ase-topic IS a different story so just feel free to try xqf ;)

Its no prob to run the 1.31 either so ... many programs are ./configure; make; make install; too so whats the point ? Just because its easy I don't need to manage my files with portage ?

If I decide to use Acitivisions isntaller for quake3 1.32 will that cause any problems later down the road with portage, or will there be anything special I need to configure later?

No problems at all. You just won't be able to use Portage to upgrade later.

Given the decent quality of the installer/upgrader, I don't think that is a big deal. I myself have never used Portage to install Quake3, and I don't think it could be any easier.

Anyone else want to give the opposing opinion?

If you don't want to use portage for managing the quake installation that's absolutely fine with me!

What I am opposing is your reason for doing so. It's easy to do a lot of things without portage so why use it at all for those?

My argument is simply that I want to manage all the programs I install with portage. It's like using checkinstall or something on slack...

Agreed. While I'd rather not get into a spitting contest over this one, I just have one (small, humble) comment. I have a lot of commercial linux games, including Quake3, UT, and many of Loki's. Of those, only Quake3 is represented in Portage. In my mind (and only for me, and not necessarily for anyone else), it's easier for me to administer my 'commercial games' the same way... by using non-portage installers and updaters.

One of the things I do miss is ease of installing some of the Quake3 mods, such as osp (although my favorite, freeze tag, is not in portage either, afaik).

On the other hand, I love portage (why would I be here otherwise...) and try to use it for everything when possible.

Well I don't own a loki game, I just dl the pr and symlink my pak0.pk3 from the windows installation and wanted to manage it all with portage so I made the ebuilds and submitted them so others could do so too. Thats how quake came into portage :)

Huh? It's in portage for those using my ebuilds and for all others its just an unzip ospsomething.zip in your quake dir. Whats uncomfortable with that?
