Ok this is new to me,
This is for newbies like me :D

If you have problem with diskspace, and you even have tried cleaning /usr/portage/distfiles. You might want to look at your /usr/src/ directory

Code:

# cd /usr/src && du -h

And check how much diskspace is lost for your old kernel trees,
I saved 2.5gb by removing old kernels that I dont use. from 90% full root partition I have now 50% full!!!

I didn't know that kernel trees could take so much diskspace :D

You probably want to check the virtual/linux-sources line /var/cache/edb/virtuals and /var/cache/edb/world to make sure that any old unused kernels aren't listed.

Does unmerging an old kernel remove all traces of it? (besides /boot/*, of course)

What's the cleanest/best way to remove a kernel?

my line in /var/cache/edb/virtuals

Code:

virtual/linux-sources sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

doesn't say exactly which kernel, I know that I have used gentoo-sources 2.4.22 and then all tje gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.x kernels..

Now I only use the latest 2.6.4..

What does this line say, should I edit it??

The gentoo-sources are the 2.4 series and the gentoo-dev-sources is the 2.6 series, so you should take out the gentoo-sources as you only use the 2.6 kernel.

Unmerging only removes the last source tree you downloaded for that particular kernel. It also removes it from the "world" settings so it won't try to emerge again next time you emerge -U world.

The best way to get rid of unused kernel sources is to unmerge it, then rm -rf the remaining (older) versions of that kernel source.
