The Hardware forum should be renamed in my opinion to cover a broader topic, yet at the same time narrow it's focus on the problems users experience.
As it stands now, the majority of hardware issues are dependant on the kernel. Either your hardware is supported by the kernel or not. You effectively double the theoretical traffic received by this forum by broadening the possible on-topic threads. Yet at the same time you focus on the true problems by showing hardware as being related to your kernel.

Power management, PCMCIA and compatible hardware all fall under the realm of the kernel (with helper userspace tools).
I believe the forum should be renamed to "Kernels & Hardware." Even better would be to also change the description to include a mention of "laptops." The Kernel can have many issues related to such things as multimedia, filesystem, security; yet with hardware it really boils down to the kernel and modules.
The immediate benefit of this name change is it becomes crystal clear where to talk/post about kernels and hardware. I believe the intention of the Hardware forum is for kernel related posts... well let's make that crystal clear because people may not make the same connection (as seen by OTG and Gentoo Chat still containing kernel related threads).
What do you think? |
